LETTER To the editor: The house league of the Whitby Iroquois Soccer Club has completedA its regular season and piayoffs are now underway. Thanks go out to ail coaches and parent volunteers whose dedication each and every week for the past 15 weeks made an enjoyable season for Whitby and Brooklin youth. Special thanks to Jackie Mc- Blain, Sam Coppolino, Tony Van- derley, Robert and Cindy Ruther- ford for co-ordinating their respec- tive divisions in order to maintain a smoôth running season. The efforts of a few ensured the 1,100 plus children in the Whitby- Brookiin area got to play and learn soccer. Next season many will return along with new children from the increasing population. More volunteers are needed as the popuiarity of soccer increases. Courses and' development programs are organized and run in the off-season in order to educate and inform volunteers. Ail in terested persons should feel free to contact the executive of the Whitby Iroquois Soccer Club. Sincerely, Gerry Plakmeyer 411 z BROOKLIN REDMEN were put British Columbia, where they will at- through a rigorous practice last week tempt to win the Mann Cup. before leaving for New Westminster, Free Press photo Brooklin coach plans run-and-gun style By ROXANNE REVELER Although Brooklin Redmen went undefeated during the 1987 season with 20 regular season and seven playoff victories to earn the Ontario lacrosse Association (OLA) cham- pionship, they are not taking it for granted that they can waltz to a Mann Cup win. On the contrary, Redmen head honcho Peter Vipond put his sqiüad throughthree vigorous practises at Brooklin's Luther Vipond Arena last week, paying particular atten- tion to oltensive one-on-one situations. The reasoning is simple. Their opponents for the national chamn- pionships, New Westminster Salmonbellies, have an excellent, disciplined defense, one that can shut a club down fast. And balan- cing the defensive lines, are some great marksmen renowned for put- ting shots in the net. What Vipond intends to do is go with his teamn's run-and-gun style of play, which often causes odd-man I ATOM Whitby Iroquois soccer SQUIRT Whitby Lions 3 Kelly Green/Go O Goalacorers: Steven Race (2), Tim DaSilva. Salmonbellies finished on top of the Western Lacrosse Association (WLA) again this year with a 20- 4 record and earned a berth in Mann Cup action by downing Richmond in semi-final action in five games, and Coquitlam in six. The rough and tumble WLA final series sidelined Brian Baker, John Gilchrist, Ross Angelucci and veterans Dave Durante and Ivan Tuura. Each was on the injury list for several games, and although New Westminster coach Steve d'Easum predicts ahl will be ready for the opning whistle, this had not been confirmed at press time. Salmonbellies, have the strength of last year's Mann Cup winning lineup, including three strong lines and two solid netminders. ficuit to contain. He was the WLA's top gun this year with 85 points in 24 games. Following close behind in the stats were Bob Johnston, second in scoring with 74 points, and' Geordie Dean, third with 68. With ail three playing for Salmon- bellies, it's easy to see why they are undisputed champs of the west. Add to this trio veterans Eric Cowison, -Lyle Robinson, Tod Lorenz and the between-the-pipers duo of Shawn Quinlan and Rod Bannister, and you have the back- ..bone of the western contending team.
