The Downtown Business Im- provement Area is proud to be a participant in the Heritage Canada Main Street program and wants to share the heritage of the 1down- town area with you on Saturday, Sept. 12. A number of local groups are working together to make it a fun- filled day. Begin the day with pan- cakes at Rotary Centennial 'Park from 8 a *m. to noon. Ail proceeds will go to Rotary's international projects. At 10 a.m. or again at 1 p.m. you can join Brian Winter at Byron and Elm Streets for a walking tour of downtown Whitby. Another 10 a.m. happening wil see Mayor Attersley officially opening Whitby Lanes (153 Brock St. N.) with a ribbon cutting ceremony followed by free hot dogs and drinks as well as two fashion shows. From 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., the third annual House Tour of the Durhamn Branch of the Architec- tural Conservancy of Ontario will take place. Tickets may be pur- chased at the Free Press or a num- ber of other downtown shops for the privilege of touring some of Whit- by's beautiful heritage homes. At il a.m. you can burn off the morning's pancakes with an old fashioned log sawing contest. Classes for the event will be men, womnen, mixed and children 12-16 years. Throughout the day watch for other heritage events such as buggy rides from Byron and Dun- das.. At the Bank of Montreal you can view photographs of some of Whitby's stores in years gone by . Merchants will be getting into the heritage theme with windows and costumes. At the four corners, you can move to the sounds of Bob Mooney's Dixieland Band and wat- ch for those evier popular Down- town Whitby balloons.
