This new in- dustry award was sponsored by the International Flowerbulb Centre (IFBC), Hillegom, the Netherlan- ds, and the Canadian" Nursery Trades Association (CNTA). The prize in cludes a trip for two to Holland "and a tour of the Keukenhof,, the world-renowned showcases for bulb flowers. Cullen Gardens was established 20 years ago, when the land and fir- st log cabin were acquired. After 13 years of planning and building, the Gardens opened in 1980. It is now home to a variety of floral and other events through the year, par- ticularly a tulip festival in May, when nearly 70,000 bulbs flowers are in bloom. Florascape was created to recognize excellence in the use of flowering bulbs in landscape design designers and architects, the com- petition is meant to promote hor- ticulture to ail Canadians. Chess popularity down Michael Szilagyi of Whitby, vice president, of a regionai chess associatibn, is hoping to boltster membership with more senior and junior players. "lWe have seen a large turno ver in our junior ranks," says Szilagyi. "Many kids drop out because they don't wish to cope with the thinking process or background theoretical preparation." The association's "star" junior now is Ashburn's Matthew David- the Chess Federation of Canada's, national rating system. Szilagyi says. chess is a good competitive activity for seniors. The association is also looking for more women to participate.. Chess is stili fighting its image as a "rainy day" pastime only, says Ermanno* Mucignat, president of the association which stretches from Agincourt to Oshawa.
