Free Press photo Shoestring Performers present'Gwendoline' Director Jeannine H. Butler opens the 14th season of the Durham Shoestring Performers with Canadian James W. Nichol's play entitled 'Gwen- doline.' The early 1900's drama set in small-town Souther Ontario will be performed on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 23 and 24, and Thursday and Friday, Oct. 29 and 30 at 8 p.m. in the Arts Resource Centre, Oshawa City Hall Complex. The opener will feature Roz Michaels of Whitby in the title role of Gwendoline, the attrac- tive, wealthy and eccentric character who is an em- barrassment to the upright and repressed townfolk. Her behavior is either ignored or tolerated by her neighbor Pork Easton, played by Bob Jones, and his drinking buddy Jud, played by newcomer Paul Hof- fman. However when Simon, a smooth-talking travelling shoe salesman played by Ken Bond of Whitby, appears in town, the people are no longer tolerant. Simon's late night call on Gwen- doline and his decision to stay with her for a few days spark righteous indignation and sexual- frustrations. Pork Easton's 16-year-old son David, played by Jason Birch, is extremely sensitive to this turn of events as is their housekeeper May, played by Diane Peet, also a newcomer to the group. Tickets will be available as of Thursday, Oct. 1 at Information Oshawa, City Hall Complex and Key Man, Oshawa Centre. Ad- vance tickets are $4, those pur- chased on performance dates are $5. College teachers vote on new contract offer Community college teachers across the province voted on a new contract offer yesterday, and although the results from the coun- cil of regents will not be known until sometime today, it is expected to be overwhelmingly rejected. Ontario public Service Em- ployees Union (OPSEU), Local 354 president Arthur Smith, who represents the 200 or so teachers at Durham College, indicated the 15- page contract offer probably will be rejected by about 80 per cent of the teachers who cast their vote. "Although it (the offer) contains a few interesting proposals, it isn't acceptable," said Smith. He said the salaries of top college teachers are slipping behind their contemporaries at the high school level. The latest wage offer in the two-year deal from the council of regents, which negotiates on behalf of the province's 22 com- munity colleges, gives an increase of 4.3 and 4.5 per cent in each of the two years -figures which Smith says are below the rate of inflation. He also said the contract offered would take away some already- gained items, something that he termed as unacceptable to the union. Smith did say that even if the con- tract is rejected by the teachers, OPSEU has agreed to continue negotiations until January prior to holding a strike vote. Durham College enrolment is up slightly Durham College post secondary enrolment is up slightly over last year. There are a total of 2,668 students registered for the 1987-88 academic year, compared with 2,650 enrolled last year. Listing the enrolments by respec- tive faculty areas, - there are 649 in applied arts, 1,037 in business, 447 in health sciences, and 535 in technology. - il jý l,..i 1J (q: > t Ur1
