VlHITBY FEE PRESS, WEDNES DAY. OCTOBER 7, 1987, PAGE il Mayor s say region running out. of industrial land -ýhIà Ib * n hpmari By ROXANNE REVELER The mayors of Durham's eight municipalities want something done immediately to build up the Region's dwindling supply of in- dustrial land. *At a recent meeting b management committee, the mayors of Whitby, Ajax and Oshawa expressed concern that they were running out of industrial zoîied lands and requested that staff come up with some viable ways to alleviate the condition. Economic development com- missioner Pat Olive told the mayors there was only enough in- dustrial zoned land within the Region to last for another three or four years. Between 300 and 400 acres of land a year are being ab- sorbed by industry in Durham, said Olive, adding Ajax and Oshawa are in the worst situation. Olive indicat ed Oshawa has less than 100 acres of serviced, in- dustrial land left while Ajax has about 30 acres of industrial land presently serviced with water and j sewers. Whitby is in a better f position with 150 serviced acres; Pickering somewhere between 150 and 200 acres. B ut Whitby Mayor Bob Attersley was not impressed with the figures quoted for his municipality. "Whitby may look like it has a f high inventory, but it's ail bought and gone," said Attersley. "I'm hoping that we're moving on, that we're trying to bring some land on j stream or we 're going to strangle j ourselves ...1I told you that three years ago. Whitby Youth Osh awa Mayor Alan Pilkey blamed the scarcity of industrial land on a recent bylaw which prohibits local municipalities from buying land. Hle said the Region is not amassing any land. -We're prohibited and the Rlegion won't move," said Pilkey. -That's the recipe for where we are 0ow ... shortage.' He went on to suggest that loca municipalities be allowed to pur- chase land on an interim basis until such time as the Region develops a policy subject to reviewing the of- ficiaI plan, financing and servicing the land. He felt this was the only way for municipalities to buy land while the process were still reasonable. He pointed to Ajax and Pickering where real estate prices CORPORATION 0F THE TOWN 0F WHITBY IN THE MATTER 0F THE ONTARIO HERITAGE ACT.
