LETTER:0 To tlie editor: At tliis time of year, we give tlianks for our blessings. Many of us will help tliose less fortunate by rnaking a donation of non- perisliable food to thé Daily Bread Food Bank, by filling the bag distributed with the Toronto Star on Oct. 7 and leaving it at a local fire station. Local members of tlie Durham Region Emergenicy Food Network wîll give tlianks to ail tliose wlio donate to tlie Daily Bread Food Bank. The local food network began witli Information O5slawa's Clieckpoint Durliam, a service which helps organizations coor- dinate tlieir aid to individuals. Two local agencies wliicli are members of tlie Emergency Food Network are tlie Seventh Day Ad- WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1987, PAGE<21 Durharn cont ri butes tofoodl bank ventists and the Salvation Army. These organizations are among thie agencies which receive food fromn tlie Daily B3read Food Bank to re- stock their shelves. Then, when cornmunity residepnts corne to them, tliese organizations are able to provide emergency food. Joan is typical of tlieir clients. She runs out of food before the end of the month because. she cannot stretch her mol-her's allowance cheque of $904. Since her husband left, Joan and lier two children hav~ lived in a two bedroom apartrnent in south Oshawa, renting for $494. Once her rent is paid, she lias only $410 for clothing, transportation, scliool supplies, food and otlier essentials. Slie does ber best to feed lier children properly, but rarely is able to give them fresh fruit or vegetables. Tom is another typical client. He came to Oshawa hoping to find work. Now, however, lie lives in a rented room with a hotplate, for which lie pays $80 per week., His rnontlily welfare cheque of $440 leaves only $120 to buy food all rnonth. He too cornes to emergency food providers to help him get by. Mary's liusband, David, was lucky enougli to find a job at a ser- vice station. He works for $5 per hour while Mary takes care of their child. Their one bedroomn basement apartment costs $435. Even when David works a 40-hour week, his monthly earnings are only $800. Usually, lie only works 35 hours, reducing lhis income to $700. To make ends meet, Mary must go to an emergency service to obtain food. Neither she nor David can un- derstand why they need charity to feed tlieir farnily when David is working. 1Without supplies from the Daily Bread Food Bank,- the -Salvation Army, Seventh Day Adventists, and eight other agencies would be unable to lielp people such as Joan, people like tliem received emergency food from agencies like these In 1986. Please help these, organizations to continue their, work by making a' donation of non- perishable food to the Daily Bread Food Bank.
