Whitby 430-2350 Mic"ha It's about a week before the oc- tober grand opening of his new dealership in Pickering, the lan- dscaping has yet to be compléte and other preparations are being made. "Could you move those cars blocking the entrance?" owner Michael Boyer asks of one of his new sales team in an office within the spanking new, attractive showroom building. But he still likes the "~country dealer" label that has been affixed to his jiame, particularly in the fast-growing western area of Durham Region. "This town is almost growing too fast," he says of Pickering, scan- ning., through the big showroom windows, the busy 401 highway to the south and, to the north, White's Rd., off which is the entrance to the dealership. "I want to run the business from a country point of view. And 1 want to slow things down a bit. People go too fast here. " That means country-style man- ners from ail aspects of his dealer- ship, from service to sales. He notes, for example, that when a customer came in to drive off with his new car, he was a bit taken aback when Boyer's staff interrup- ted a quick departure and instead celebrated the event with the new owner, not unlike the new father of a baby. Needless to say, the customer was glad to be the centre of the event. Boyer credits his staff in Apsley for being the models of professional courtesy. Whatever he does at the 401-Whîtes Rd. location in Pickering, derives from Apsley. "The people in Apsley I would put Up against anybody in Canada," he says. "We have the Edmonton Qulers of dealerships there. I base everything on Apsley. " Boyer was sales manget since 1976 at Jack McGee Chev-Olds in Peterborough, when, in 1981, he and McGee, revived and Apsley dealer- ship that had previously gone bankrupt. McGee put up 75 per cent of the funding while Boyer put up the remainder. "By summer (1982) I owned the whole thing," he relates. The Boyer operation is also a family affair. Brother Peter joined in Apsley in 1984, taking care of the business depay.tment and even- tually becoming general manager. Now he, too, is in Pickering. Father of Michael and Peter, Edward Boyer, was vice president of Playtex before retiring to SEE PAGE A2 MICHAEL BOYER (leit) and brother Peter ini front of the iiew Pontiac-Buick dealership iii Pickering.
