WHITBY FREE PRESS, Durham Moves, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1987, PAGE A3 A falltune-up can prevent winter aggravation Winter is fast approaching and bringing a whole new season of car trouble with it. Getting a fall tune- up now can save drivers both money and aggravation, according to the Canadian Automobile Association. Car owners should find a good mechanic and make sure that a thorough tune-up is done to make their car as winter-proof as possible. Ron Brown is president of After- market Training Corporation, an organization offering advanced training to certified mechanics. He advises drivers to be aware of the differences between a regular and a winter tune-up. According to Brown, the former consists of adjustment or replacement of spark plugs; oil and filter change; air filter change, if necessary; adjustment of engine timing; inspection of manifold heat valve is used; carburetor adjust- ment, if required; PCV valve change, if necessary; tightening or replacing of belts; and replacement of ignition wires, if necessary. Also up-to-date is the inclusion of two female members on the 10- person sales staff. "They're energetic and seem to be more caring to the customer," adding that many buyers are young working women. And, of course, they're exuding some of that country, Boyer style. "In addition to a fall tune-up, drivers should also have a general safety inspection once a year. This involves looking for parts that still function but are almost worn out," said Brown. "A vehicle may run for several years without any obvious problems but this doesn't mean it shouldn't be checked." "Good automobile maintenance prolongs the life of your car. Given the harsh winters so many Canadians face, winterizing is especially important," said Tom Hedges, superintendent, P-C Claim at Travelers Canada, a Canadian insurance company. A winterized vehicle is but the first step towards safe winter driving. Motorists must also prepare themselves for ice and snow conditions by carrying a sur- vival kit containing a scraper and brush; shovel; booster cables; sand, salt or kitty litter (provides traction); traction pads or pieces of old carpeting; a first aid kit; flashlight; flares; extra fuses; radiator hoses; fan belts and a blanket.
