As you are no doubt aware, the House of Commons was recalle'd -specifically for the purpose of drafting and passing this Bill. There was an urgent need for the government to take immediate steps to deter the growing abuse of our refugee policies. We were acting on the wishes of the Canadian public, and we have followed through on this promise. One would think with the increasing demands of the Canadian public to resolve thîs matter, the Senate would have passed this bill without delay. Regrettably, this is not the case. Since Bill C-84 reached the Senate, the Senate has continuously stalled the passage of the Bill. Senators decided they should study the Bill in Committee, therefore, the Bill now sits in the legal and constitutional affairs committee. Senators are listening to the opinions of witnesses-the same witnesses who appeared before the House of Commons employment and immigration standing cern- mittee. I find it totally abhorrent for the Senate to deliberately stal a Bill, which 1 can only assume they are doing as an exhibition in grandstançling. I cannot comprehend how an unelected body can purposely delay the passage of a piece of legishation, legislation which specifically follows the wishes of the Canadian public and notwithstanding the fact this excercise is a total waste of the taxpayers' money. Can they genuinely feel there is support for their actions? Or perhaps they do not care. Political points is their sole goal. Whatever they profess they are attempting to achieve, I am totally disgusted and ashamed with this unacceptable treatment of the Parliamentary process antd the wishes of alI Canadians. 1 N i 1 1 1 1 E.C.E.
