WHTTIBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 21, 1987, PAGE 25 Councillor expense increase urged Members of regional council and. staff will get,,an increase in the amount of money they can spend while attending conventions if council approves a management committee recommendation today <Wednesday). In a report to committee, Durham chief administrative of- ficer Don Evans pointed out that the policy on convention and con- ference allowances for staff and members of council had not been reviewed since October 1984. According to Evans, finance department carried out asurvey recently which indicated the policies of the Region fell short of Most other regions and municipalities with respect to per diem allowance. He said most other municipalities either provide a greater allowance or provide that daily out-of-pocket reimbursemen- ts are based only on actual expen- ses incurred. .After discussion, management committee approved changing the conference and convention exkpen- ses, such as meals, on actual ex- penses incurred, rather than paying at a higher per diem rate, Those attending such conventions now are allowed $30 per day for ex- penses. Hockey season is underway FROM PAGE 22 and Brian Duff had the goals ina 5-2 win over Markham, Mark O'Dell, Chalmers, Fairbrother, Duff, Andy Vanderland, Jarnýie Collins, Dave Clark and Peter Defina scored in a 9-3 decision over Pickering. Fair- brother also had four assists. As part of a new policy adopted by the Whitby Minor Hockey executive that allows coaches from outside of Whitby, Pat Kiely of Oshawa takes over the major ban- tam (age 15) AA team. "We're going to have a grinding team," says Kiely, who coached an Oshawa midget team last year. He said that its too early to predict how the team will match Up against other teams in the lakeshore league. Key players will be defenceman Bob Willets; Darrin Lee ("He gives you everything every game"') who was a minor bantam last season; and a Whitby newcomer, Dan Niemi, who cornes from the Ottawa valley ("He's turned out to be a pretty slick player. ") Consistent goaltending is expec- ted from Bryce Percy and Mike Mitchell. League opposition includes AAA teams fromn Oshawa, Peterborough and Kingston, and AA entries fromn Markham, Ajax and Pickering. The regular schedule was to begin last week after the Whitby squad split its exhibition games, in- cluding a violent contest against Thornhill. Home games are Sunday at 6:30 p.m. at Iroquois Park. There is also a good supporting cast at the bantam age level, as Whitby bas two minor bantamn teams. "We look pretty good," says coach Charlie Washer of the minor bantam first team, made up of 14- year-olds and even some 13-year- olds. "We've got some good quality players. " His team is a AA entry in the lakeshore league which includes both AA ýand AAA teams fromn markham, Pickering, Belleville, Oshawa, Peterborough and Kingston. Washer, too, says it's too early to make guesses on the future per- formance of the team. But hie looks to strong performances from Dierrick Ellis, Clark Trolley, Rob Martin, Martin David, Mike Bolton and defenceman John Catto and good goaltending from Shawn Dawson and Bob Harrison. And Washer also looks forward to the renewal of a rivalry with Pickering. Whitby home games are usually Thursdays, 8:45 p.m., at IroquisPark. GýaryRock, who is making a return to rep hockey, will coach the second minor bantam team which plays at the B level. Despite three lopsided losses in its three exhibition games, Rock is optimistic about bis team's chan- ces. And the Whitby team won its first league game against Markham 5-1. Rock staged a golf tournament and barbecue for the team to allow players to get to know each other and develop a camaraderie. He hopes that will help the team as it does battie with Pickering and Markham in the three-team league and participates intournaments in Fort Erie and Little Britain this fall' "tI think we're going to do pretty well," he says noting that bis team is big in speed, not size, and strong defensiyely with anchors Brandon Smith and Troy McPhee. Drew Myers Ieads what Rock describes as a 'well-balanced" forward unit. CALL A P:ROFESIONA PAINTING &DECORATING Reasonable rates, Experienced Work Guaranteed Phone Bill at 668-9605 BUYING AN ANNUITY?
