PAGE 2, WHITBY FRUrF, PRESS, WEDNESDAY. OCTOBER 21, 1987 Bylaw to remove boats from harlbor eff'ective Simday The'iown-imposed deadline for removing the two derelict boats from Whitby harbor is this Sunday, Oct. 25. On that date, a Town bylaw goes into effect which council believes gives them the jurisdiction to have the boats mnoved. "We wiIl lay charges on the 25th,- affirms Mayor Bob Atter- sley. The two boats, the Prince Ed- ward Island and the Isle. Royale, have been moored at the harbor since March. The Town has since been trying to get rid of them. "We will test the bylaw in court but that stili doesn't get rid of the boats," says Attersley. He also says the Town would not move the boats. "Where would we move them to?" he says. Attersley's attempts to have the boats moved included a request for federal assistance. But Scott Fennell, MP for Ontario riding, says there is nothing the federal government can do as long as dockage fees are being paid. The boats are moored in federal WAC FO MN* , SAS s s: .130t * ACH SNJ ANJ water at the harbor. The dockage fees for the boats are,$50 a day for each. "There is no law saying we can move them. Me is being charged dockage fee and we had hoped he wouldn't pay. Then we could have kicked theiiý out," says Fennell. Fenneli also says he told Whitby council last July to pass a bylaw giving them the right to have the boats removed. The bylaw is based on one that was passed by the City of Kingston which was having the same problem. Lt states that no vessel shall be moored on waterfront property. Council passed the bylaw on Sept. 28~ and made it effective Oct. 25. Fenneli was unaware the Town had passed the bylaw. "I have been telling council con- tinuously since July on. That is great news," he said, adding the bylaw worked in Kingston. One of the owners of the boats, Art Robinson, was unavailable for comment. Me had stated previously that the boats would be gone by mid-October. Society gets $ 7,000 Whi'tby council has approved a $7,000 grant for' the Whitby Historical Society. The society will use $3,000 of the amount to help finance the Whitby museum located in the Kendalwood plaza. The remaining $4,000 will be used by the society to pay off a debt on a feasibility study. The study was commissioned by the society last year to investigate locations in Whitby that could house a permanent museum. Councl gave the grant on con- dition that it receive a copy of the study.from the society. Nurses may strike Durham Region's 100 public health nurses expeet to go on strike Monday, Oct. 26.
