Yet, many still feel ill at ease in a car lot, suspecting some razzle daz- zle huckster might try to take ad- vantage of them. Revealing resuits A recent study looked into the way women make a new or used car purchase. The results were revealing. It found, for example, that more than half the women who buy a car first read about their chosen model in a magazine, which they consider more honest and less hyped than some other advertising media. Men and women are built dif- ferently, and nowhere is the dif- ference more acute than in the gluteus maximus. Women com- plain the driver's seat in most cars aren't made for them. And, they're right. One way around the problem might be a powered seat for ease in adjusting the driver's position back, forth, up and down. Women in the study complained they often can't reach the pedals and found the steering wheel position awkward for many. A par- tial solution to this problem might be an optional tilt-steering wheel. Seat belt design for shorter people, enhanced safety features that include more distress lights. and rear windows that are easier to reach for snow and ice removal all rank highly with many women drivers. Their wish list reminds us that automakers still cater primarily to the male market -eve though the number of women drivers and car owners continues to grow. So much for the new car buyer. The study also looked into the con- cerns of women in the used car market. It found that women who had lit- te or no mechanical expertise believed they stood a good chance of picking a lemon. Of course, they can reduce the chances of making a bad buy if they keep a sharp eye out for painted- over rust, along the rocker panels, inside the trunk and door panels. Even though a peek under the hood may intimidate some, you don't have to be a hot shot mechanic to recognize a neglected engine compartment. Check it out Take it for a test drive, and take your technician with you, so he can listen for any sinister knocks and pings. Finally, if you're satisfied, congratulations: you've just bought yourself a car. Survey claims previous experience is unportant Women have some definite ideas about what they expect from the technician who services their cars. According to a recent survey, the number one consideration, when it comes to choosing a technician, is previous experience. The majority of women car drivers and owners just won't take their car to a technician they don't know Good service And, they will only deal with a shop that has a reputation for prompt, honest and reliable service performed by licensed technicians who keep up-to-!date with the latest developments in automobiles. They also want a shop that warranties the work it does, is clean, and in a handy location. All this reflects a growing in- terest in cars among women, who are becoming far more aware than they used to be about the need to have at least basic mechanical knowledge of the vehicles they drive. That's why eight out of 10 women in the survey said they'd gladly attend car care seminars if they were offered at libraries or as a night school course at a com- munity college or high school. In the meantime, women have I I~ J ~ ~ ~ N. N. N ~ \ '. i : ,' ~ easy access to some valuable and practical vehicle maintenance in- formation through a variety of handy sources. The owner's manual, for exam- ple, provides a comprehensive routine maintenance schedfule, which, if followed, guarantees their car will receive adequate service attention year round. The automotive section of most book stores stock inexpensive driver's handbooks to prepare women drivers for on-the-road mechanical problems and emergencies. And, for more indep- th reading, the reference section of the local library offers detailed and illustrated manuals and magazines on a wide range of automotive sub- jects. Every woman car owner should invest in a good general car care book that describes not only how her car works, but how to identify trouble before it becomes too serious. Since cars are changing so rapidly, such a book shouldn't be more than two or three years old. Finally, women needn't be shy about asking their technician questions and expecting him to look her in the eye and give her a straight answer. 1/ 6 year, unlimited mileage corrosio perforation warranty • Plus more than 30 other standard features. $8,690* Basedon mnulacurer * ase etan pranufacturer's sugg. retail pnce for 2-door model.
