Santa Claus to give parking reprieve Whitby notice a rotund fellow with a white beard and red suit placing a card on the windshield of their car, they needn't worry. It's not a parking ticket, just an early Christmas present from the downtown nierchants. Operations committee has given approval ta a request from the Downtown Business Improvement Area ta, have Santa Claus place a dime in an expired parking meter from Dec. 1 to Dec. 24 The dime will give shoppers an extra 34 minutes on the nieter. This system replaces plast year's BIA program of offering free parking. The BIA and Town noticed that some motorists abused the program and parked at the meters ail day. Santa wilI deposit the dime then place a card on the windshield explaining the meter had expired and that the extra time is the merchants' way of thanking themn for shopping downtown. One of the Town's parking meter attendants will don the Santa suit. At the same time, a regular parking meter attendant will be making the rounds and expired meter after the extra 34 minutes. "There will, of course, have ta be good ca-ordination between the Santa Claus and the parking meter attendant in order that this program attains its desired objectives," commented the public works department. The program only applies ta on-street meters and Santa will only deposit one dime in each meter. Jaycettes have suits for rent Wihitby Jaycettes are renting Santa Claus suits for the holiday season at a cost of $30 for a 24-hour period ($10 refundable upon return of suit in good condition.
