Work begi*ns on lot Work began last week after the low tender of $131,450 by Hard-Co Excavating of Whitby for 69-space parking lot at the corner of Byron St. N. and Elm St. was approved by Witby council. With contingencies and inspection fees the total cost of the project will be $151,150, $1,150 more than had been budgeted by the Town. Council will use the -Parkiriu revenue fund to pay for thie over- expenditure. The lot will have 67 regular parking spaces and two spaces for drivers who are handicapped. It is expected that the lot will be completed by the end of December. However, in the event of bad weather, the lot will be given base course asphaît thon the surface asphaît will be applied in the spring of 1988. Events for Canada musie weelk Nov. 22-29 has beeri declared Canada Music Week throughout Durbani Region and across Canada. This marks the 28th annual celebration of the achievemerqts of composers and musicians since the 1670's. Originally, of course, most music was written for churches. These days it's aiso being written for instrumentalists and orchestras, plays and films and just for fun. Locally, music associations, choirs and individua[1 musicians are programming Canadian works and gearing up for performances later this month. Students have been busy creating posters and original comnpositions for .a Canada Music Week competition sponsored by the Ontario Registered Music Teachers' Association (ORMTA) -. Wtby Public Library and McLaughlin Library, Oshawa, will display the work of these talented young people. The. Royal Canadian College of Organists will usher in Canada Music Week with a mass choir festival on Nov. 22. This concert event will take place at 7 p.m. in Simcoe Street United church, 66 Simcoe St. S., Oshawa. On Nov. 24, the ORMTA will hold a Canadian Composers Recital at 7:30 p.m. in the Arts Resource Centre, Oshawa. This is a student recital, with young perfgormers ranging from beginners to accomplished senior students. There is no admission charge. Wallace bouse may get designation The home of a former Whitby councillor is now undergoing heritage designation. The George Wallace house, located at 404 Byron St. S., was built around 1853. Wallace was a centre ward coun- cillor in 1857. In 1865 he married Maria Warren, daughter of William Warren, customs collector at Port Whitby. According to the Local Architec- tural Conservation Authority Committee <LACAC>. which recommends houses for designation, little is known about Wallaceafler 1857. But it is recorded that he died at the provincial lunatic asylum in Toronto on July 12, 1868. at the age of :37. I3efore his death, Wallace sold the house (o James Hamnilton, a general merchant ini downtown Whitby. <Hariton was a partner with Chartes Roberts in a dry goods store on Brock St., midway bet- ween Dundas St. and Colborne St. On Oct. 16. 1877, the store was destroyed in a great f ire that wiped out a whole block on the east side of Brock St.. between Dundas St. and Coîborne). By 1902 the house had become the property of Cephas Seldon. a mem- b)er ofTown couticil in 1926-27. (One of Seldon's sons, Harold Seldon. went on to become one of the most prominent citizens of Belleville. Harold was a member of Belleville city council, the Belleville Board of Education and president of the Belleville Chamber of Commerce.
