PAGE 26, WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 25,..1987 Liz Aruta Time passes quickly when you're having fun, especially here at Denis O'Connor High School! We are already one quarter of the way through the school year . On Thursday Nov. 12, students received their interim reports for the first semester. There were a few heartaches, but all in all students have done well with the new courses. Accompanying the mid-term reports were parent-teacher meetings. Parents were briefed on their child's progress and/or lack of it. Teachers also explained the outline of the courses set for the students to these parents. Overall, it has been a very busy first half of first semester. There have been a lot of crackdowns - not only with the rules and courses by the teachers, but also with books by the students. Good luck to all! Other ongoing school activities include graduation photographs, ticket sales for a DO'C ski jacket, volleyball and basketball tryouts, and much much more. From Nov. 16 - 25 Grade 12 and 13 students posed in caps and gowns for the yearbook. These photographs give the graduate an idea of what is to come this coming June. Our hockey team hs another brilliant gimmick to raise funds for their upcoming trip. The-boys are raffling off one dollar tickets, the prize being a DO'C ski jacket worth seventy dollars. I'm sure all this hard work will pay off for our Chargers! Our girls' volleyball teams have begun tryouts as well as our boys basketball teams. This early training will prepare our athletes for their season ahead. With our coaching staff and talented athletes, I'm sure DO'C will see a lot of success in the near future! Ann Dunn As the holiday season draws near Trafalgar comes alive with the hustle and bustle ofthe winter spirit. Basketball season is coming to an end, so in the next couple of weeks house finals will be held. Then staff will play the senior basketball team, a season highlight, Volleyball is the next sport on the court so get ready for some more great games. All four houses are practising eagerly for their house plays which should be a great success. The plays will all be performed on Dec. 2, at 7 p.m. with Mr. Ross Morrow adjudicating. This year's school play is "Our Town" by Thorton Wilder and auditions will be held in early December. Practice makes perfect, and that is why we have started practising our Christmas carols early for our carol service on Dec. 13. This service is always a delight as it continues in the traditions of our school. The final day of term will be Dec. 16 when we have our Christmas dinner. This is an evening at which even those who do not celebrate Christmas can reflect on the true meaning of Christmas today. Education experience week selections should be handed in after our holidays. With so many choces such as skiing, self-defence instruction, performing arts from backstage, a visit to New York, visit to Reagan's American and Washington, it's a worthwhile experience in March and is eagerly anticipated. r,6 n. m1~i Anttila, Nelson receive commencement awards Lisa Anttila received the Andrew Foundation scholarship for highest marks while Camille Nelson earned the Mayor's Medal for outstanding leadership during commencement exercises last Friday night for 1986-87 Gr. 13 students at Henry Street High School. Free Press photo Gayle Snyder j' All eyes were on cuiuimencement last week and with the ending of mid-terms, it was a welcome event. It was one of those few times when the Grade 13's had the chance to all get together for a good time. After all it will be one of the last times they will all be together before going their separate ways. It was also nice for graduates to come back and see all of their old friends and acquaintances again before going on to new challenges and experiences at universities, college or jobs. The evening started off with our former principal, Mrs. Beal coming back to say a few words on the success and achievement of the graduating class. The formal ceremony was a buffet and dance at Annandale Golf and Country Club in Ajax. Thanks to Mrs. Blair, Miss Elliot, McFadden and Miss Grodovic for organizing the social events and Mr. Brady for the formal events. By all reports, it was an excellent evening and a good time. I'm sure the memories will last for a long time.
