Local dealer not too worried about ruling By MIKE JOHNSTON One local Hyundai dealer isn't too worried about a preliminary dumping ruling by the federal government which, if upheld by a Canadian Import Tribunal, will force an increase of 36 per cent on the low priced South Korean cars. "I'm not terribly worried. I'm here to serve my customers and see that they are happy," said Phil Calnan, owner of Pickering Hyundai in Ajax. Since the ruling last week, he says the dealership has had more traffic but not an increase in sales. The dealership has sold between 400 and 500 cars a year since it opened three years ago. Calnan says the tribunal decision would hurt his customers who, because of the low price, are able to purchase new cars. The Hyundai XL, the lowest line Hyundai, is now selling for $6,995. The most expensive Hyundai sells for $13,000. "It seems unfair. Most of my customers are young people and this would be difficult for them." He says the low price enables his customers to buy new cars With a warranty rather than purchasé used cars with an unfamiliar motor or tires. The Department of National Revenue investigated the matter after a joint complaint from General Motors and Ford. The department concluded that of the 77,300 cars Hyundai Auto Canada imported in 1986 and up to March 31 this year, 99.9 per cent of them were priced 36 per cent below their cost in South Korea. Calnan says the complaint was made because GM and Ford were unable to compete with the low priced Hyundai, "It is difficult for the competition although GM and Ford have walked away from the market," says Calnan. He says if the ruling is When he first got .into the business of selling body parts for vehicles, Chris Rimmer was looking for a name that had something to do with the fibreglass parts he had. A picture in a Sears catalgoue later evolved into Tall Glass Fenders, which he now operates 1750 Plummer St., unit 6, just south of the 401 and west of Brock Rd. in Pickering. 'We thought it was perfect," says Rimmer. But the parts are now steel, not fibreglass, as business continues to grow amidst a growing population. 'Now we sell Taiwan replicas (after-market body parts). They're cheaper and better quality, and just kind of revolutionized the business," says the native of Freetown, Sierra Leone in Africa. When business began about six years ago on Finlay Ave., Rimmer and wife Kim, who handles the bookkeeping, sold 7BLOWOU SAMPLE THE SA LIMITED QUANTITIES '87 STANZA 'GXE' MSL $18,682 Loaded, automatic, luxury car. Hyundai could either absorb the duty itself or raise the price of the cars, but Calnan thinks the company would absorb some of the duty and pass the rest on to the dealers. The tribunal must hold a public hearing within 120 days to determine if either Ford or GM were injured. CHRIS RIMMER operates Tall Glass Fenders in Pickering. INTRODUCING... 1988 Mercury Topaz The Best Gets Better'! $16,000 worth of items in their first year. Now they more than surpass that every month. As the name suggests, fenders are a specialty although doors, door panels and hoods are among other parts displayed in the store. 'We deal with body shops....and younger guys who don't have money to get a fancy part." Chevrolet pick-up trucks, particularly those made between 1973 and 1980, make up most of their business. "They made millions of them," says Rimmer, who came from Africa to Canada when he was 14. After completing high school in Scarborough, he worked in a gas station, drove tractor-trailer for CN, "rebuilt engines for awhile" and then got into business. He first opened on Finlay Ave. in Pickering, doing body work and engine repairs, then moved to McKay Rd., then to Regional Rd. 23. He later gave up installation and just sold parts. Rimmer, who lives in Pefferlaw near Lake Simcoe, also operated an auto wreck business near his home, until giving it up recently.
