And they'II be armed. The petitions are stili coming in but the past three weeks have been "very positive," according to Lioness Club of Whitby member Andree Hay, who coordinated a petition blitz that has thus far obtained about 3,700 signatures in support of the board's effort to get more acute care beds for Whîtby Keiep it up "There was tremendous support ... more than what we really expected," said board chairman Bill Wallace, adding that "medical staff in particular" supported the petition. That show of support will be needed when a case is made before Mrs. Caplan who has, flot surprisingly, already supported the review that led to the décisioni previously made to allocate acute care beds to Oshawa and Ajax-Pickerinlg and chronic care beds to those same facilities and Whitby General. Hospital board members have also distributed postage cards which residents can send in to express more support. As Mrs. Hay states, with ail the names in support of an expanded acute care program at Whitby General, "They can't ignore us." Keep the cards and letters coming. Powell (Free Press, Nov. 25/87) about veterans evoked many memories and certainly pointed out some of the frustrations and idiocy connected with war and its aftermath. How little people remember and how little they really care. Many of us are parents of young children who have had to go outside the community for what we perceive as basic family health services (tests, minor surgery, maternity care, to name a few). We believe it is unreasonable to, expect patients to go to Oshawa or Ajax for treatment by Whitby-based physicians. None of us thought of ourselves as "heroes," we just loved our country and our belief in our way of life. Certainly we were scared, every minute of every day, but we were not afraid of death because we neyer connected it with ourselves. We were just scared of burning or mutilation or a lack of courage before our friends. As a veteran, I now own a small apartment building here in Whitby which is my only source of incorne apart from my old age security and a small payment from the Canada Pension Plan.
