J i The winners in biggest Santa Claus parade in Whitby About 90 entries made up this year's Santa Claus parade, the largest participation in recent memory for the annual event in Whitby and perhaps second only to the parade staged for Olympic gold medalist Anne Ottenbrite. There were five winning entries in the parade, staged before a large crowd which lined Dundas St. E. and Brock St. S. in chilly tem- peratures under an overcast sky. The Henry Street Concert Band, led by Barry Hodgins, was judged best band while the North Oshawa Nationals were best majorettes out of several groups in the parade. The Downtown Business Im- provement Area (BIA) float cap- tured best commercial entry while the Kiwanis Club of Whitby had the top entry among service clubs. And the best of the bunch, accor- ding to the judges, was the W. Frank Real Estate entry, selected as tops overall. NORTH OSHAWA NATIONALS E.T. arrived "Home For Christmas" in the Owasco Volkswagen of Whitby float. DRUM MAJOR METCALFE leads the 1913 Ontario Regiment Cadet Corps. You'd better watch out! By PETER BRAMMA Durham Regional Police Toy, food rive Two weeks before Christmas I bring you advice There are people around that are not very nice. They are out on the prowl for a quick easy score So please be aware of who's at your door. They can walk past your window and take just one glance Size up your gifts and take that big chance. Through an unlocked front door, or a window out back They'll come into your house and fill up their sack. They'll be gone in one minute, they move very fast Your house wasn't first and it won't be the last. So I offer some tips to help stamp out this crime And to help you remember, I've made them all rhyme. Out for the night, so leave on a light Or a radio on, then they won't know your gone. Lock the good deadbolt, you've installed on the door This item alone, could stop a crook's score. Remember; don't show off those presents you've bought Keep drafes tightly closed. or it miaht be for naught. Someone suspicious is lurking next door? Call the police, it's what we're here for. By helping each other, we'Il avoid so much grief Keep alert, and maybe you'l help stop a thief. So have a safe Christmas, hope your holiday is great And I'il see you again in nineteen eighty and eight. The Durham Region "Gift of Christmas" toy and food drive began last week.
