At the last meeting of regional council, members voted over- whemingly to support Whitby's ef- forts to secure 43 active care beds for the hospital. Last summer, 306 new beds were allocated for five regional hospitals by the Ministry of Ilealth. 0f that number, 105 were for active care beds, the remainder for chronic care patients. And although Whitby General received 36 chronic care beds to add to the 32 it already had, it did not get an allocation for ac- tive care beds. (Active care beds are used by general patients at the hospital such as maternity and post-operative). Whitby Mayor Bob Attersle" o), iose asembl6ed Whitby despe ' . Lely needied additional beds a'. its hospital, particularly since the population has tripled since the facility was constructed in 1968-69. "We (hospital) started out with 63 beds and we still have 63 beds even though the population has tripled in size," said Attersley. Pickering councillor Alex Rober- tson stated his wife was a coor- dinator at Dr. J.O. Ruddy Hospital when it was built. "It (hospital) was unique in itself when it was built as it was designed to expand within itself," said Robertson. "But it is impossible to expand when you cant get the beds to put into it. " Whitby councillor Tom Edwards echoed Robertson's remnarks, ad- ding when the hospital was initially built, it was to eventually supposed to accommodate 400 beds. "We asked for 100 beds that first year and had to settie for 63... .and we haven't had anything since," said Edwards. He said ministry guidelines for active beds in hospitals is 3.5 per Region May hire associate medical officer Members of the Region's management committee, com- prised of the eight municipal mayors and regional chairman Gary Herrema, will decide today whether or not (o hire an associate medical officer of health to assist Dr. Jean Gray. In a report, Gray concluded it was "absolutely imperative" to hire an associate medical officer of health due to the rapid growth being experienced within Durham. She stressed it was getting more difficult (o devote her proper atten- tion to the public health depar- tment's core programs which working on such new initiatives as school support, assistive devices, dis,.ase prevention, AIDS education and health lifestyles. Gray indicated she is not atten- ding to high priority duties only, meaning she must devote her time The Ministry of Health has ap- proved the new position in principle and has indicated it would provide 75 per cent funding for it. .Gray stated that once approval was given by regional council, it would take at least six months to scrutinize applications before an associate could be hired 100 population. With the current 63 beds, Whitby's ratio is now less than 1.4 beds per 1,000 people and Edwards said, according to the rate of growth in the municipality, it would drop to one bed per thousand residents by 1992, the lowest rate in I 1~ I I I I It's easy.
