The device was found in- iqhnnl locker by teachers after a student reported seeing a 'bomb. Durham's explosive unit liscovered the deyice was not a bomb but was twu flares and fuses connected to a timer. The 1,200 sLudents were evacuated at about 9:30 a.m. and were allowed to return to the school around 10 a.m. Under the Youçg Offenders Act the youth cannot Mg identified. Tuning up PIPE MAJOR Bill Livingstone of Whitby (shown left) tunes up before he leads the 78th Fraser Highlanders, recently judged as world champion pipe band, on stage at the Oshawa Lit- tle Theatre last Friday night for a con- cert before a packed house. J.H. Jenkins, senior judge for the Durham judicial district, introduced the band members and joked that Livingstone, Canada's outstanding individual piper, is a lawyer "in his spare time." 1 Free Press photo Cullen winter carnival Cullen Gardens annual winter carnival will begin Boxing Day, Dec. 26, with the arrival of Percival the Penguin and continue until Jan. 3. Kni ght wins third prize Stacey Knight of Whitby was a third prize winner in the 12 - 14 age group for Seal Books' How I Picture Green Gables contest. More than 2,000 entries were made over the past summer for the contest. Thé winner, Tara Az- zopardi, 12, of Islington, won a one- week vacation for her family to Prince Edward Island. Jason Brachvogel of Whitby won honorable metnion in the contest which featured entries from across Canada. Susan Rutledge, one of the judges in the contest, said of the winning entry by Azzopardi: "Tara's Green Gables is a warm and ap- proacable house, made up of large blocks of color in green, blue and white. Anne is visible in the lower right hand corner of the picture, standing with her back tÃ". the viewer as she starts up the path to the house. There is a sense of discovery in Tara's painting, the sme feeling one experiences while reading Ann of Green Gables." Comment: Improvements needed on Bell ifo service By BRYCE COOPER In October of last year Bell Canada introduced a new service number system in the 416 area code, the 976 service system. Through the year of operation Bell has found several sponsors who have set up phone lines offering a variety of information. Bell has grouped these lines into seven different categories: children's corner, sports, humor, lottery, soap, miscellaneous and horoscope. For each category there are a minimum of two lines providing a pre-recorded message relating to the category and ranging in price from 65 cents to $2. The children's corner offers two lines, each costing 79 cents and each now featuring Santa Claus. On one line Santa describes conditions at the North Pole while the other has Santa introducing different animals of the north and then ex- plaining how they survive in the Arctic. Each only lasts 45 seconds and each offers a 15-second commercial for another pay line. The humor lines don't fare much better, with two lines at the same price as children's. Dial-a-laugh of- fers 45 seconds of mostly pathetic jokes and one-liners. The Yuk Yuk laugh line is more creative but sub- ject matter is offensive. Each of the three sports lines are different - a bonus to this category. "What's the Score" provides up-to- date scores and even breaks down the scoring on one of the previous night's games. "WWF action line" features some of the latest stars of the World Wrestling Federation commenting on who they will punish in their next big bout. Both of these lines are 79 cents of- fering the standard 45 seconds of message. The third sports line is 'sports trivia,' allowing contestants with Big Sisters'fundraiser LORI COOK, an organizer of the Newcastle-Oshawa- Whitby Big Sisters' meet-the-artist night fundraiser, and Gord Brady of Whitby, who offered a photograph for the event, scan a Robert Bateman print which was a draw prize. Free Press photo push button phones only to answer multiple choice questions from five categories: hockey, baseball, foot- ball, WWF wrestling, and general sports trivia. If you get all four questions correct you win one of the daily prizes or your can save poitns for monthly draws. Each call costs $2 and you are guaranteed four questions. If you're incorrect, the correct an- swers are not offered. The lottery line offers .the latest winning numbers of the various lot- teries for that week for 65 cents. "Soaps" provides the latest stan- dings in the ever changing world of General Hospital, the Young and the Restless and Another World, for 79 cents. Romance and gossip dominates the miscellaneous category featuring the "Romance line" and "Dial-a-Romance." Each of the two romance lines is directed to women, with each story being told by a mature man with a husky voice carrying you away on a trip through love and passion in two minutes. . Celebrity gossip and the 'Great Game Phone' make up the rest of the miscellaneous category with each costing 95 cents and $2 respec- tively. Celebrity gossip provides all the juicy tales of the hottest stars in Hollywood, featuring the Playgirl update. The 'Great Game Phone' is much the same as the sports trivia. However, the subject is music and the categories are 50's and 60's, 70's, rock of the 80's, country quiz and music of Hollywood. Windows broken The window to the newly opened constituency office of Durham Cen- tre MPP Allan Furlong, was broken sometime Friday night, Dec. 11, by someone using a pellet gun or slingshot. The office is located at 122 Dundas St. W. No estimate of damage was given. Durham Regional Police also report a window at the AMCU Man- chester Credit Union at 400 Dundas St. W. was also broken in the same manner. Damage to that window is $500. The last category is horoscope which offers two lines for each sign in the zodiac at 79 cents and 99 cen- ts. In this student reporter's opinion, there are many alternatives to the messages offered by Bell, most of them are better and cheaper. Telephone media is a relatively new concept in Canada and it could take a while before it becomes a contender with newspapers, radio and television. 'Dial a Whatever' was a trendy idea in the United States. But it took a while to arrive in Canada and perhaps the opportunity was missed to cash in on the idea while it was still hot. Service numbers .offer a variety for entertainment. But im- provements must still be made. IMMANUEL CHRISTIAN SCHOOL, on Rossland Rd. near the Oshawa-Whitby border, recently purchased its own school bus, the first in the 25 years the school has been open.
