In peewee, Newmarket downed Whitby Free Press 2-0 in the ch- ampionship game. Newmarket had defeated Whitby Miracle Food Mart 2-1 to reach the* final while Free Press edged league rival Dodd & Souter 1-0 to gain the final. In atom, Newmarket downed Ajax 5-2 in the final. Newmarket had defeated National Trust of Whitby 8-1 in the, semi-final while Ajax got by Town Video 1-0. Neil Yetman of Totten Sims Hubicki, a Whitby team, was named most valuable player of the tournament in the atom division while Shane Yakeley of Duff's Towing, another Whitby team, was selected as outstanding goaltender. In peewee, tournament most valuable player was Dan Sawyer of Woodview Park, Oshawa. Top goaltender was Jean Faubert of Miracle Food Mart, Whitby. The tournament was organized by the' Brooklln-Whitby Minor Hockey Association, with Del and Gloria Rints directing. The team, coached by Jim Boyd, iost their opening game but then battled back to win the regionai silver stick tournament in Pickering over- the Christmas weekend. Peewees move on in tourney The Whitby major peewee AA team began competition in the Richmond Hill tournament over the hoiidays. Impressive in round-robin play, Whitby won their first game 3-2 over Royal York Rangers. Whitby's goals came fromn Brad Stella, Peter Allison and Stevenson. In a hard-checking second game, Whitby downed Aurora 4-2 with goals coming fromn Clayton Stillar, Jodie Johnston, Vipond and John McIvor. The final game of the round-robin had Whitby cruising to- a 5-1 win over Thornhill. Leading the scoring was Stella with two and singles fromn Copeland, Allison and McIvor. The goaltending duo of Hayden and Gray gave up only five goals over the three games. Whitby advances to the semi-finals undefeated.
