"It was a great game," said Whitby coach Mike Pruneau, despite the result. "It was just the way the puck bounced."! .The win for Belleville was timely revenge for a 5-1 defeat inflicted by *Whitby in Belleville about a month ago. And Primeau expeets Belleville to be one of his team's biggest hur- dles as Whitby seeks to reclairn the Ontario AA championship. WVhitby opened the silver stick tournament with a 3-3 tie against Cambridge. Stephen St. Amnand was in net for Whitby as Paul Dillon, Wayne Primeau and Andre Marois scored. Kelly Grey got the shutout while Primeau scored twice and Adam Parks once in a 3-O win over Markham. Grey again got the shutout in a 6-0 win over Oakville. Marois and Primeau each scored twice while Jon Racicot and Gavin Tackney had singles. Grey was in net in the final game. Primeau scored the only goal despitb-several good scoring oppor- tunities by Whitby. Whitby had tied the game 1-1 with just less than two minutes to play. Whitby's first defeated Pickering soundly by a score of 5-O with two goals each from Sandy Cohen and Scott MacDonell and a single from Mark Babony. Cohen was selected MVP of the game with Jay Stewart recording Whitby's shutout. Whitby then faced Aurora, win- ning a tuugh game by a score of 5- 3 with two goals from Jamie Allison and singles from Babony, Briafi Medeiros and Ian Armour. Armour was selected MVP of this game for his excellent play. Whitby's next game was a 3-3 draw with the feisty Bramalea team: Cohen scored twice and MacDonell once. Both teams' goalies were outstanding in this game and, Whitby's goalie, Jay Stewart, was selected MVP. This game earned Whitby the right to play against Ajax for the regional championship. Whitby lost 5-2. Ajax scored their last goal into an empty Whitby net. Again, both Whitby goals were scored by Cohen earning him that game's MVP. During the tournament Whitby's strong offensive play outscored their opposition by 15 to 11. Whitby also enjoyed excellent defensive work from Adam McLeod, Paul Moore, Brandon Knight, Jamie Pogson, and Paul Leclair with superb goaltending by Shaydon Santos and Stewart. As a result of the second place finish, Whitby was also invited to participate in the international silver stick finals in Newmarket in late January. Atoms rmn out of gas Whitby's major atom B team reached, the final of a Christmas tournament in Bowmanvîlle before falling to the host team. "We had a good tournament. The team just ran out of gas," says Whitby manager Dave Arges. Whitby downed Peterborough 6-1, Ajax 10-O and then Oshawa 5-2 to reach the championship final in the Dec. 28-30 tournament. But Bowmanville prevailed 7-1 to win the tournament.
