Director of Public Works Citizenawar'dwinnersl Ontarlo's Junior Citizens for 1M8 father; have been selected.* Brad Haffle, 9, of,,Napanee,_ a Ontario Comnmunlty Newspapers Association (OCNA). president Jean Morrison announced the 12 award recipients Dec. 4', after they were chosen fromn among 56 nominations submltted by member newspapers. The recipients. are: Lisa Kuen- zig, 18, 'of Teeswater; Joshua Davis, 10, of Burllngton; Randy Thibeault, 16, of Foleyet; Brad Haf- fie, 9, of Napanee;. Susan Mit- chell, 16, of Bracebridge; Janice Johnston, 17, of' Oakvllle; Geoff Carnegie, 14, of Llstowel; Ryan Giddy, 12,0of Fergus; Jena BeIlisie, 14 and Yvette Pritchard, 14, of Combermere; jeff Phaneuf, 16, of Tilbury; and the Merry Mates, a group award recipient from Mount Forest. The Oakville-based OCNA, which, represents over 250 communlty newspapers in Ontario, Quebec and the Northwest Territories, bas honored Ontario's Junior citizens with an awards program since 1981 with co-sponsor Canadian Airlines International.- Youngsters fromn ages six to 18 are recognized for their courage, ingenuity, resour- cefulness, initiative, leadership, fortitude and community service. The award recipients and their families will be the guests of Canadian Airlines and the ONA at an awards ceremony at the Toronto Hilton Hotel on March 4. They will be received by Ontario Lieutenant- Governor Lincoln Alexander and each presented a $200 cheque, a commemorative plaque, a gold lapel'pin and a family portrait with LETTER: FROM PAGE 6 43 active care beds for the Whitby General Hospital.. Furthermore, during the course of her remarks, the minister referred to Ajax, Pickering and Oshawa, as the growth areas in the Region of Durham. jither the minister has flot done her homework or those who are providing ber with the necessary statistical data required to make an informed decision are quilty of a monumental error. In 1985, Whitby's population was 44,241. By 1991 it is anticipated the population will increase to 59,365 and as of the year 2001, the population will have reached 76,435. in 1981, the population of Whitby, Ajax and Pickering accounted for aipproximately 35 per cent of the region's total. This bas increased to 39 per cent by 1985 and it is projec- ted to increase to 48 per cent of the region's total by 2001. Noticeably, Oshawa's population as a percen- tage of the region's total has decreased by 10 per cent from 42 per cent to 32 percent during the same time period (1981 - 2001). Despite the recent allocation of active care beds to Ajax-Pickering Hospital and Oshawa General Hospital, by- the mid 1990's, Durham Region will be experien- cing an acute shortage of active care treatment beds. Let us not forget, the beds recently allocated wiIl not be functional for a period of approxixnately five years. It is therefore, in the best interests of the citizens of Ajax, Pickering, Whitby and Oshawa, to pressure the minister for a reevaluation of the recent decision wbich precluded active care treatment beds for Witby General Hospital. I urge my feilow citizens to write Brooklin Cycle Ieads BrooXan Cycle maintains a com- fortable lead in the Wednesday Night Dart League at the midway point of the season after a 7-3 win over TP. Morrison praised both the awar- ds recipients and. the other nominees. "lThey can ail be proud :o*f their accompisbments, " she said. "lThey proved tbey're willing to go the extra mile, if for no other reason than for their own personal growth and pride, and it's a lesson that shouldn't bo lest on the, rest of Ontario's 1988 Junior Citizens i- clude: * Lisa Kuenzlg, 180of Teeswater, for ber efforté in overcoming a' physical handicap to become ac- tively involved in Browmies, Guides and the Junior Farmers; * Joshua Davis, 10 of Burlington, for, the qulck thinking shown in savig the life of a friend who had fallen down an abandoned weil; * Randy Thibeauit, 16, of Foleyet wbo, despite suffering serious bur- ns from a propane stove explosion, walked seven kilometers to seek help for bis more seriously injured', cancer patient who was the 1987 On- tario representative in the Terry FoxRun;. * Susan -. Can't wai*tfor beds to Thç Honorable Elinor Caplan, Mînister of Health, lOth Floor, Hepburn Block, 80 Grosvenor Street, Toronto, Ontario, M7A 2C4. In addition to expressing your displeasure at the minister's decision, I would urge you to ask the minister why a decision of this magnitude bas been based upon demographics which are outdated and do not reflect the actual growth taking place throughout the region and in Whitby in particular. I would also urge you to ask the minister why she finds it acceptable to place an unnecessary strain on the famiies of patients who must leave the community of Whitby to receive the active care treatment which they require. In ber closing remarks, the minister indicated that she would contine to monitor tbe situation at Whitby indoor soccer Dec. 19 NUS Realty .... .4 Adam Eldon 3 S. Plakmeyer Owaco .....S T. Tran- slated, that means that the gover- rment may consider the allocation of active care beds at some future date, a date wbich I humbly suggest, may tie in nicely with the next provincial election. Tbis is simply not satisfactory. It -takes five years from the date of announ- cernent before the beds in question are functional and inasmuch as the next provincial election will not likely take place prior to 1991, we connot waittrine years for active care treatment beds which are needed now. The honorable minister's willingness to use the citizens of this community as pawns in a crass political game is simply unconscionable.
