Two offers were made, both at- tractive, but which had the result of posing Oshawa councillors versus the remaining municipalities as to the preferred -location for a new headquarters. After much study and politicking the issue eventually came down to a decision by regional chairman Gary Herrema -it. was bis vote that broke a tie and kept the existing building in Whitby. The iCity of Oshawa had made a bid for a downtown location for a new- headquarters building and WELFARE In March, the Region of Durham urged the provincial and federal governments to take over the municipal share of welfare costs. "It would, be a godsend to our taxpayers," said Oshawa coun- cillor Cy Elsie, whose motion was given support by a vote of 15-12. RETIRING Jon Jenkins announced in November he would retire in 1988 as chief of the Durham Regional Police force. He was responsible for amalgamating. eight municipal forces into one when regionalization took place in the early 1970's. agreed to withdraw its $3.3-million dlaim in the existing building as part of the deal. Meanwhile, Graywood Develop- ments offered to include a new building as part of its development north of Rossland Rd. Other options REGION BUDGET The Durham Region budget ap- proved in April included $857,000 to be spent in 1987 to start sanitary sewer repairs in areas in the region where flooding occurred from the August, 1986 rainfaîl. before counçil were to expand the existing facility or,, as finally decided in October with Herrema 's vote, to remairi as 18. Oshawa -has since gone ahead with its claimn of ownership in the existing building. INTERCHANGE Durham Region pushed for a new interchange connecting Hwy. 401 and Lake Ridge Rd. (Regional Rd. 23), asking the Province to consider using the artery as a primary 401- 407 freeway-to-freeway connection in the future.
