More.Block, Parents wanted WUITY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY,,FEBRUARY 10, 1988,l PAGE 23 The .Whitby-Brooklin 1Blockc Parents program. continues to face a crisis that is" threateninrg the ef- fectiveness of the, programn in the community. "The number of new applications from people wanting to become Block Parents is growing steadily," says Heather Bray, president of the Whitby-Brooklin Block Parents. "But there are stili flot enough people out there volunteering to help on the committees. "lWe stili haVe a few areas without chairman, such as R.A. Sennett and R. Hutchinson, and this nieans that the kids are not get- ting any information about Block-- parents," she adds. "lYou can put your Block Parent sign in the window, but if the kids aren't getting the message about Block Parents, it won't heip anybody." A chairman is responsible for going into the school twice a year to promote awareness of the Block Parent programn to the kids, as well as doing a yearly update of althe Block Parents in that area. There is also a yearly newsletter that must be delivered. "'There is not much work in- volved and the, more helpers there are on a committee, the less there is for everyone to do," says Bray. She is very concerned about the lack of interest in the Block Parent program, particulariy in the areas without chairman. "We'vebeen trying to cover al areas, but we can't do that any longer. It's too difficuit for a han- dful of people to distribute signs, newsletters, etc. ail over Whitby- Brooklin. If people are not -in- terested in co minfg to our meetings, that's a clear message to us that they aren't interested in the Block Parent programn and that area will go uncovered, " she says. "The sad thing in this situation is that- the kids are the losers. " Bray adds. Block Parent meetings are held on the second Thursday of the mon- th at Durham Regional Police Station on Rossland Rd. at 7:30 p.m. At the last meeting, two mem- bers of the Whitby-Brooklin Block Parents program, Debbie Bennett and Donna. Mackintosh, were awarded pins by Bray as acknowledgement of service provided to the program for holding a position on the central committee for at least two years and for ser- ving on their own area committees. "We need more people like this to help out," says Bray. This year, Durham Region will be hosting the Ontario Block Paren- ts conference in Oshawa from may 4 to 6. Representatives will be coming from ail over Ontario to participate in this yearly event. "The conference is a yearly boost for ail of us," says Bray. "It really helps to rejuvenate the interest of the leaders. We're not just a bunch of women sitting around doing nothing" she continues, "Although it is strictly volunteer work, this is serions business. When it involves children, it involves every one of us."ý For more information on how to help the Block Parent program, caîl Bray at 655-3334.
