Researchers from1 two NRC divisions provided the Olympie team with a new aerodynamic sled -design and improved runners to enhance performance. The new sled, built by Fiberfix Industries of Calgary, has been tested at the Canadian champion- ships inCalgary. .NRC's National Aeronautical Establishment (NAE) developeda more aerodynamically-shaped cowl in order to reduce drag and in- crease speed. Mathematical modelling techniques were used to predict the time gained. The NRC wind tunnels were also used to test the uniformn and the streamlined fiberglass pods of the luge team members who race at speeds up to 120 km/hr. Different pod designs and several suit modifications were investigated to find the lowest drag combination. Sun Ice, the officiai supplier for clothing for the Calgary Oiynipics, worked in conjunction with the luge team to redesign the collar of the uniform to prevent wind penetration. NRC also design ed Canada's Olympic Torch at the request of Petro-Canada, the official sponsor and organizer of the Olympic Torch Reiay for the Calgary Winter Olympics.
