Oyagi says cooperation could lead to a permanent Museum, Whitby could have a permanent niuseum within two years if Town council and the Whitby Historical Society work together on finding a proper location, says society president Bill Oyagi. O n Monday night, the society presented a study, conducted by Marshall, Macklin and Monaghan, to operations committea -wbich looked at the Preservation awards to be given FROM PAGE 12 buildings. Judging âill take place during May, June and JuIy with the winners to be notified by the end of August. The restoration category will include buildings whicb have been refurbished for -continued use in' their original formi. The judging will be based on the authenticity and care with wbich the work bas been carried out. The adaptive reuse category is for buildings which have been converted to a new use, such as a bouse converted to offices or retail space. The appropriateness of the conversion and the degree to which the original character of the building bas been preserved will be major considerations in making the award. The last category of new construction will apply where an addition bas been made to an eiting building or an entirelY new building bas been added to a complex of older buildings. The judges will consider the reasons for the new construction as well as how they relate to the eisting buildings. Ail projects must be in Durham Region and must have been completed within the five years preceding April 30. Since individuals may nominate their own properties, smaller pro ects will not be overlooked. There is no entry fee. The ACO hopes *that over the years, these awards will inspire.a greater respect for the historic architectra fabric of the region. The society commissioned the study wben the Lynde House was still at its location on Dundas St:* W. and D'Hillier. And al1thougb parts of the study deal witb Lynde House's role as part of a community mnuseum, Oyagi says the study is still useful in identifying locations for a permanent museum. (Lynde House was nioved to Cullen Gardens in 1985 by the Town of Whitby after the Town became aware tbat the bouse, whicb use W bhouse the Wbitby mnuseuni, was in jeopardy of being tomn down by Monarcb Homes, the company wbxcb owned the land.) The society bas been operating a temporary museum out of the Kendalwood plaza. The study notes that if a new museum was Wo be built, three suitable locations would be the property adjacent to the Whitby Public Library, the property adjacent to the Station .Gallery and the lot adjacent to the Whitby Centennial Building. Oyagi told The F'ree Press he bas already begun -preliminary discussions witb the Province for use of the vacant land registry office and witb the Durbamu Board of Education for use of the Brock St. school. "There is a remote possibility, but the registry office would be an ideal site," says Oyagi, adding that any site should be selected *by tbe people of Wbitby.
