Roland Hill con- ducts the band which will perform music from around the world both classical and popular. Many of these pieces are on the band's first-" ever professionally recorded cassette tape, which the band hopes to have for sale at the concert, price $10. Admission is free to the éon- cert. Joining the band on that night will be Whitby Junior Brass Band conducted by Alan Black, for their second public performance. This group practises Tuesday evenings at Heydenshore, while the senior band'rehearses on Thursdays. It involves learners of al ages, who eventually progress to the senior band. The Whitby Brass Band is also busypreparing for the North American brass band championships this year. The contest takes place in Atlantic City, U.S.A. April 9 & 10 involves brass bands from ail over North Amnerica. For this the.band must perform a 30-minute program including one specified test piece. Three judges listen to the bands behind a screen, so that the iden- tity of the contestants does flot influence their judgment. In 1986 the Whitby band placed fourth in their category, and in 1985 the band missed second place by only one point out of 300. Theywere unable to compete last year.
