She was 89.. The daughter of John Kennedy and Martha Ashenhurst, she was born in Owen Sound, on'June 24, 1898, and lived at Ermn and Lindsay. beforecomingtoWhitbyifl1914. She started her teaching career at. the new Brock Street public. school in Whitby when it opened in 1916 and was principal of the school in the 1920s. In 1930 -Miss Kennedy left Brock Street school and the following year began teaching at Toronto at the Withrow PubliecSchool. She later taught and acted as a principal's assistant at Blythwood, Deer Park and John Ross Robertson public schools in Toronto..', The first woman to becomne a principal in the Toronto school system, she was principal at Sack- ville, Hodgson and Eglinton public schools, retiring in~ 1963 as principal of Wilkinson School ' In-1939 she received a bachelor of arts degree and after retirement from teaching, she obtained a law degree. After retiring, Mis~ Kennedy returned to Whitby and became ac- tively involved in St. John's Anglican Church and the Whitby Historical Society. Miss Kennedy served as president of the historical society in 1978-79. She was also a member of the cemnetery board for St. John's Anglican Church. She was proud to have beeni born in the riding represented by Agnes McPhail, Canada's first womnan Member of Parliament, and she was a first cousin of Kate Aitken, one of Canada's first fernale radio broad- casters. He was boni on September 4, 1913, in Toronto, son of Percy North and Elizabeth Muir. He married Doris on June 6, 1970. He was'a meniber of the Church of Christ in Ajax. Mr. North is survived by bis wife, 'Son Robert, stepson Allan Redmund, stepdaughters Eliza- beth Foster and Hazel Hopwood and six grandchildren. He was predeceased by- brother Perey.
