Preparation of soil essential By PAULINE VANDERMEER Vandermeer Nursery Ltd. Gardening is an art as well as a science. Soil preparation is an im- portant and essential task which should flot be ignored. The preparation which is done now will help to ensure for your gardening success this season. Here is how to loosen and improve your soil. Spade or rototiil your gar- den to a depth of eight inches. This will help to aerate the soil and en- courage good root growth. If you are preparing large areas you may find it practical to rent a power rototiller. Do not rototil when the soi is saturated with water. The soil should be loose and weil drained. If it contains heavy dlay you should mix ini sand and peat while spading. Spading in organic matter such as peat moss, manure and compost (leaf mold) wii enrich your soi. it would also be beneficial to work in an ail purpose garden fertiizer. If weeds are a problem apply a weed killer and let the garden lie failow for two weeks. Once the spading is completed the surface should be raked so that the clumps are broken up. Now the preparatiofis are com- pleted and the garden is ready for plants. However, be sure you do not plant until after the risk of frost is past.
