The Canadian hoping to Cancer Society is 50 years old this year. Thirty years ago the five-year survival rate for lymphatic cancer was 25 per cent, and today it's 80 per cent. In 1987, the south Durham unit assisted 210 patients with services such as transportation, ostomy supplies, dressings, drugs, supplementary foods, home- making foods, medical equipment, boarding out expenses and mastectomny visiting. Those services for south Durham involved a total of 26 volunteers at acost of $32,577.,' Education services in 1987 cost $2,240, with four. volunteers. 1n 1988 education volunteers ýplan to spend $4,000 on education programs. Kiwanis music, festival now on The Oshawa-Wvhitby Kiwanis Music Festival began on Monday, April il and will run for two full weeks. There are about 1,800 entries in this year's festival, and as one entry can be a- choir or a band, there will be a total of about 16,000 individuals in the entire festival. There will be 58 school bands from Durham Region competing in the band section of the festival. There are also school choirs, ensembles and instrumental groups, as well as individual competitors in piano, electronic organ, accordion, guitar and *violin. Seven churches and halls ina Oshawa and one in Whitby will be used during *the two weeks for the Kiwanis Music Festival.
