WHITBY FREE PRESS, BOATING, APRIL 20,1988f PAGE A7 The advarn PETERBOROUGH -The new OMC Cobra counter-rotation system offers significant boat- handllng advantages for a broad range of boaters who favor twln- engine stern drive power, according to OMC marine products manager Billixon.' "lThere are a number of situations in which counter rotation can make hiandllng easier and m*ore precise, " Dixon said. "For example, our counter rotation stern drives can minimize the tendency to list that is cornmon to deep-V boat designs, and especially common on high- horsepower twin engine, rigs with standard rotation. "The opposite rotation of the propellers on a counter rotatmng boat helps neutralize the torque that causes listing," he continued. "0f course, you can achieve the same righting effect by using trim tabs," Dixon said, "but only at the expense Ope rat ing regrulations BytheCanadlan Coast Guard SaliIng vessel a) When each sauing vessel has the wind on a different side. the vesse! whiCh has the wind on the port side shali keep out of the way of the other. On offshore boats, Dixon said, counter rotating stern drives can provide mncreased stabiity for fast runninginheavyseas. "In a wave-jumping situation where the props leave the wvater,"' he said, "la tremendous amnount Of torque is exerted on the huil when the props re-enter the water's sur- face. If the propellers are rotating in the same directly, they are very likely to cause an immediate list in the opposite direction on re-entry. Counter rotating ufits minimize this problem." According to Dixon, the OMO Cobra system achieves counter rotation in a shiftable gearcase ratherthanthroughasolidgearcLIse with shifting handled in a separate transmission unit. In the OMC Cobra system, forward thrust force is transferred tbrough a drive gear located behlnd the vertical drive shaft -normally the location of the reverse gear in standard rotation drives. Dixon said that in OMC Cobra counter rotated gearcases, a double radial bearing assembly and re-designed bearlng supports provide stabiity for the new for- wardgearsystem. "Our in-the-gearcase shifting system can offer allof the benefits of counter rotation on a wide range of stern-drive boats, including smaller boats for which a transmission-shif- ted system would be impractical, because of its space requirements, weightandcost. " With our new counter rotation system, we're offering stern-drive boat builders and buyers improved performance and the latest in technology," Dixon said. ga0 toe See the Bronco Il at WILDWOO[ By the Canada Safety Councilfo There are many types of stoves staff help you equip one foryour flE used on pleasure craft.
