A boat shoe or deck shoe, designed to stand Up to constant soakings and the general abuse that boating metes out. There are two types of shoes designed for boating. One boat shoe, made popular by Sperry Topsiders, a company ont of the New England states, is widely available in most department stores and sporting goods/athletic goods shops. The traditional colora of the boat shoe are navy blue and brown, but other colora have become available due to the rising popularity of the shoe for casual wear. Made of leather, the boat shoe is specially waxed to prevent- rotting from constant waterlogging. A good boat shoe will have a non- slip surface, usually white in color, made of a rubber compound. This sole is stitched to the upper, and seams stitiched together with waxed thread optimally, again to prevent water rot and to hold the shoe together in a way that ordinary glue cannot under wet conditions. There are usually leather laces to tie up the shoe, leather being more flexible and durable than regular laces. The deck shoe, more of an "apres boating" shoe towear on the deck, is made of less durable canvas, and has a sole similar to a sneaker. It of- ten resembles the deck shoe in I. styling,- but has regular cloth laces, wears like a aneaker, and cornes in a wider range of colora. Preferred colorsa arong boaters are navy blue, red and kelly green. Both styles of shoe have become quite popular, and are often con- sidered an essential part of a "prep- py-Ivy League" wardrobe, and are worn quite widely by the general ~AHOY!
