During the first meeting of the 1988-89 Whitby Historical Society executive this month, discussion -was held on the future location of the Whitby museum. The society bas received several donations, some in memory of society member Margaret Kennedy. The annual meeting, held the last week of Marcb at Fairview Lodge, opened with a moment of silence honoring ber memory. X*ATHER JOHN IIARINGTON Fatber John Harrington, wbo formerly served in Whitby, died at Providence Villa in Scar- borougb on April 22, 1988. -He was 78. He was boni in St. John, New Brunswick, on January 9, 1910, son of William and Evelyn (Allen) Harrington. He was ordained at Woodstock, Ont., in 1935. Following studies in Rome, Italy, he served in Toronto at St. Patrick~s and Mount Carmel. He taught at the seminary in Woodstock for 12 years. Father Harrington returned to St. Patricks in 1953 and moved to Our Lady of the Assumption parisb in 1959. Ne served in Peterborougb for three years and was then assigned to St. John tbe Evangelist Church in Whitby. He Officers for 1988 are: past president, Phil Lakas; president, 'William Oyagi; first-vice pres- ident, Roderick Angevaare; second-vice president, Eric Glenholmes; recording secretary, Charlotte Genties; , treasurer, John Buchanan. Ail were re-elected. Directors elected are Margaret Boyce, Robin Miller, Elanor Rycroft, Faye Speers, al re-elected; Denise Tecklenberg retired from Whitby in 1980 and spent winters in Florida. He returned to Toronto in 1986, residing at Providence Villa until bis death. Father Harrington is survived by a brother, Frank; a sister, Sister Mary Harrington; and a niece, Angela Hamrngton. He rested at the W.C. Town Funeral Chapel in Whitby, with visitation on Saturday, April 23. Mass of Christian burial was held at St. John church on Sunday, Bishop Robert Clune conducting. Interment at Resurrection Cemetery, Whitby. TIIOMAS AKEY Thomas Oscar Akey of Whitby died at Whitby General Hospital on April 21, 1988. He was 77. He was boni in Guelph, Ont., on and Betty Weldon. Councillor, Joe Drumm conduc- ted the- Whitby Historical Society's election of officers and directors for tbe coming year. Following the official installation of the executive and directors, Drumm commended tbe 1987 executive for their efforts on keeping tbe VWhitby museum open at tbe Kendalwood Plaza. Following bis re-election, Oyagi commended John Van Haas- January 6, 1911, son of Ezra and Mary Jane (Foster) Akey. Ne married Mary Birrell on June 27, 1946. A lifelong resident of Whitby, he was section foreman for Canadian national Railways for 46 years. He was a member of -.St. Andrew's Presbyterian Churcb and the David T. Campbell Lodge. Ne is survived by bis wife, daugbter Mary Ellen (Mrs. Patrick Pucknell), grandchildren Paul and Kaitlan Pucknell and sister Margaret Shephard. Mr. Akey was predeceased by his brother Roy. The funeral was held Saturday, April 23 at the W.C. Town Funeral Home, 11ev. McClure conducting.
