Swish plans larger premises By DEBORAH LUCH-UK "Carpet doesn't wear out, it uglies out," according to Mike Ambler. Carpet gets dirty deep down, and often homeowners don't realize that a thorough cleaning is necessary to maintaîn the quality of this often major investment. Ambler should know about cleaning" he is the head of the Whitby subsidiary of Swish Maintenance, a Peterborough-based company, that seils and produces cleaning supplies, gives expert advice to the professional and domnestic cleaner, and distributes power cleaners. Swish is owned by the Ambler family of Peterborough. W.T. Ambler, Mike's father, established the cornpany 35 years ago and just retired his "presidential term" in favor of his other son Tony. From its Peterborough beginnings, branches. were opened iïn Kingston, Ottawa, Mississauga and Barrie. The Whitby branch was opened afrer the closing of the Oshawa location 10 years ago. Now they're fast outgrowing the present location at hopkins St. and Consumners Dr., and have purchased 10 acres on the northeast corner of Burns and Hopkins in partnership with KWS Energy Services to build a larger premi ses. The prernises will only be N2 IL comprised of two acres, while the rest will be used for other development. The new, facility will be 15,000 square feet, a vast improvement on the present location with 6,000 square feet of space. Space is needed, says Ambler, in part due to the inc5reasing volume of sales to industrial customers ---rom industrial and comemrcial growth in Whitby. "Everyone," ýsays Ambler, 'needs the cleaning supplies and maintenance products we offer." He also believes that the Hazardous Wastes Act has prompted industry to "dlean up its act," and corne to Swish Maintenance to get the supplies they need * Restaurants are big customers, since 'You won't go back to a restaurant if it's dirty," says Ambler. Few people are aware that Swish operates a Cash and Carry showroomn, offering cleaning, waste disposal and maintenance products. Ambler says "Swish is the fastest growing industry of this kind in the country." Swish is a member of the Canadian Sanitation Group, a collective of sorts that pools the coet of updating and creating new cleaning chemicals and formulations. Most of the actual cleaning solutions sold by Swish are CSO products, and Swish is also an -agent for Rubberniaid products and Union Carbide (garbage bags) products. The company selîs ý power. washers and services all equipment it elîs with a mobile repair service, if needed. The town of Whitby buys liquid chiorine from Swish at-low cost to maintain public pools during the summer. As Ambler states, "We're the people professional cleaners corne to for advice."
