Whitby's operations committee gave approval to the new rates which will become standard in each municipality in Durham Region except for Pickering. For parking at a parking meter without paying, or having time run out on a meter, the fine will rernain at $5; for parking a vehicle in an area prohibited for parking, the fine will increase lrom $10 to $15; for stopping or standing in a prohibited area,the fine will increase te $20 from $10; for parking in a fire route the fine will increase ta $30 from $25; for parking in a space reserved for the handicapped, the fine will increase to $50 froin $5. .The latter fee caught the attention of regional councillor Tom Edwards, who said ho was tempted to try and have the fine raised to $500. "Nothing bothers me as much as an' individual parking in a handicapped spot," said Edwards. Councillor Marcel Brunelle received Edwards' support when -c ho moved that a five-roinute leeway be given to those 'people parked at a meter after 4:30 pa.
