WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, MAY 11, 1988, PAGE 7 PAGE SEVEN NAME DROPPING Ihave always envied those writers who could inteject pithy quotations into their ,writing, the kind of quotation that could sum up an entire thesis in a.few direct hard-hitting words. But I could never find them. The standard wvork on the subject - Bartlett's Quotations - just never seemed to have what I wanted. Well I finally found the book I was looking for - it's Peter's Quotations by Laurence Peter the same person who wrote the Peter Principle. That particular book, published almost twenty years ago, remains to me the only book on management which is worth the paper it's printed on. It, like a good quotation, was brief and to the point - only a hundred and fifty pages of biting sarcastic analysis on the state of modern management - "In a hierarchy, every employee tends to rise to his level of incompetance." The Peter Principle is itself interlaced with an array of apt quotations. Obviously Dr. Peter had an extensive and well-organized collection, and some years later, he published that collection for people less organized than himself. And so here are just a small sample of of the thousands of priceless quotes contained in the 550 pages of Peter's Quotations. A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always depend upon the support of Paul. George Bernard Shaw An economist is an expert who will know tomorrow why the things he predicted yesterday didn't happen today. Laurence J. Peter Statistics are like a bikini. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital. Aaron Levenstein He uses statistics as a drunken man uses lamp posts - for support rather than for illumination. Andrew Lang Statistics are for losers. Scotty Bowman The two leading recipes for success are building a better mousetrap and finding a bigger loophole. Edgar Schoaff Blessed are the young, for they shall inherit the national debt. Herbert Hoover If Patrick Henry thought taxation without representation was bad, he should see how bad it is with representation. The Old Farmer's Almanac The art of acting consists in keeping people from coughing. Sir Ralph Richardson Let us begin by committing ourselves to the truth - to see it like it is, and to tell it like it is - to find the truth, to speak the truth, and to live the truth.
