Daigle honored for Outreach work On April 26, the work of Outreach Abuse Prevention and Maureen Daigle was formally recognized and honored by John Sweeney, Minister of Community and Social Services. Maureen Daigle founded outreach in 1983 shortly after the rape and murder of Sharin Mornigstar Keenan. Because at that time there was little or no Canadian content material on the subject of child abuse prevention, Daigle designed and authored 'Kicking Up a Fuss' (dedicated to the memory of Sharin Mornigstar Keenan), and 'Safe and Happy. Daigle has presented papers on child abuse prevention and human sexuality to the International Congress on Rape in Isràel (1986) and the seventh International Conference on Child Abuse Prevention in Australia (1986). Outreach Abuse Prevention is a non-profit organization. It provides a wide range of personal safety programs that focus on sexual abuse prevention for all ages. The trained staff is experienced in leading children, adults and professionals in child development seminars and workshops. JOHN SWEENEY, Minister of Community and Social Services, recently honored Maureen Daigle as founder of Outreach Abuse Prevention. Don't monkey with names: Drumm When a street has existed for 30 years you don't "monkey" around with it, according to east ·ward councillor Joe Drumm. Accordingly, Whitby council voted against a name change for Elizabeth Cres. last Monday night. The name change had ben recommended by the planning department, noting that >the function of the road had chagged. But overwhelming .oópposition from every resident on th'e street led administrative committee to overturn the planning- recom- mendation. Part of Elizabeth Cres. had become a cul-de-sac with the extension of Manning from Anderson to Thickson. "It came back loud and clear at the public meeting that the residents did not want a naine change," said councillor Gerry Emm. Elizabeth to be reconstructed Elizabeth Cres., from Manning Rd. to Marta Rd., will be reconstructed this year following council's approval of the low tender for the work. The low bidder was Dawn Enterprises Ltd. of Thornhill with a bid of $691,167. Work will invlove installing storm sewers, storm and sanitary service connections, curb and gutter and a sidewalk. Durham Region will, install sanitary sewers and watermains at a cost of $295,000. • ý The Town's cost for the work l be $291,679 while the. 'nistry of Transportation will pay $242,712 towards the cost. Council's approval is subject to the funds being available from ministrv. Help the disadvantaged FROM PAGE 6 On the beaucractic side, administrative costs were cut. Certainly, there would be a few that might abuse such a system, but GAI would maintain a much more effective monetary incentive to work than do most of the present social prograins we now have here in Ontario and Canada. The vast majority of people want to work if they can to uproot. We need only look at the working poor who continue to work despite poverty scale wages. Human development is a matter of human Christian concern (Isaiah 3:14:15 and Proverb 31:8-9). Do write to your MPPs urging thema and the social assistance reviuew committee to endorse a guaranteed annual income scheme. Ed Sawdon Oshawa Help your Heart.. Helpyour Heart Fund
