Free Press photo Shootout goal ends O'Connor march Denis O'Connor's bid for an Ontario high school soccer championship ended in a title, game shootout with St. Jerome's of Kitchener over the weekend. "So close...so close," was the reaction of O'Connor coach Jim Boyd, whose frustration reflected that of the team members who saw the Ontario title slip away with the fourth St. Jerome's goal in a shootout that broke a 3-3 deadlock. O'Connor had posted four straight victories, including wins over the first and third- seeded teams, to reach the final. St. Jerome's, a big, physical team with a solid defence, man- aged to accomplish what other teams could not, - stop O'Connor's Paul Peschisolido and Billy Heaney. After a scoreless first half, Nick Catros scored for O'Connor after 13 minutes of the second half. Heaney, the talented striker from Whitby, had hit the goalpost with a free sbot and Catros knocked in the rebound. But St. Jerome's, whose size gave them an advantage over the smaller O'Connor squad on corner kicks, scored on just such a situation with three minutes left to tie the game. With a minute remaining, Peschisolido was foiled on a breakaway by St. Jerome's goalie Steve Pavicic, who was later named the game's most valuable player for the OFSAA final of the tournament held in Sudbury. The two teams then played two 10-minute overtime periods without scoring. "I thought we had the better chances," said Boyd. Te shootout tben took place, in which five players from eacb team take penalty shots, most goals winning. "It's frustrating," said Boyd of the final, admitting he really felt the loss because it was so close. "It wasn't bad goals. It was just breaks," said Boyd. Nevertheless, he praised his team for superb play all-round, and looks to next year when almost all the senior players will be bock, as well as a few new players from the junior ranks. "I think now that they had a taste of OFSAA, they enjoyed it," said Boyd of his squad. "They'll be that much more excited about winning it next year." O'Connor got three goals from both Heaney and Peschisolido to win their opening match 6-2 over O'Gorman of Timmins. "The guys were psyched up for it," said Boyd, as his team cruised to a 5-0 lead in the first half. Peschisolido scored three goals, Heaney and Paul Moschella one each in a 5-2 win over Crestwood of Peterborough in the second game for O'Connor. Then, in what Boyd described as a "tough, tough game," O'Con- nor edged Myers of Niagara Falls 3-2. Myers was the third-seeded team in the Ontario tournament. Peschisolido scored twice while Heaney had the other. Easier was a 3-0 win over the top-seeded White Oaks team from Oakville. Steve Barich, O'Connor's outstanding netminder, got the shutout while Peschisolido scored two goals and Heaney the other. It was one of those game everything worked," said Boyd. That win sent O'Connor into the final. Midgets take two in basebali Whitby Dunedin midget alf- stars posted two more convincing wins last week in baseball. Scott Fox and Guindon hit triples and each drove in two runs. Fulton had a double while Darren Johnston and Greg Rennie each drove in two runs. Lori Melien of Whitby will compete in a third event at the Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. After winning the 100 back- stroke in the Olympic swim trials in Montreal to qualify for both that event and the medley relay team, Melien also won the 200 backstroke to become the sole Canadian woman qualifier in that event. She went the 200 distance in two minutes, 15.29 seconds - two seconds better than her previous best and just less than half a second better than the Olympic qualifying standard of 2:15.65. Whitby Warriors improved their record to seven wins, one loss and a lie with a win and a tie during the past week. On Wednesday, June 1, Warriors defeated St. Catharines 10-8 then travelled to Brampton Thursday where they fought to a 14-14 tie. In the Brampton game, Mike Burnie's third goal, with five seconds remaining i overtime, Melien's time also broke the Canadian 15-17 age group record. Melien was third in another event, 50-metre frestyle, n which she also swims well. But her time of 26.79 seconds fell short of the qualifying time of 26.32, bettered only by race winner Kristin Topham of Winnipeg. Melien, 16, returned bome last Thursday from Montreal for a week of rest before further swim training and exams at Anderson CVI where she is a top student (An article in last week's edition incorrectly stated that she was a Henry Street High School student). Redmen easy wins have now begun Despite a short training camp, the Brooklin Redmen senior la- crosse team is beginning to "jel," according to general manager Bob Duignan. "We had a reasonably slow start but as we go on the sep- aration in the score is beginning to increase," said Duignan about his team, defending Canadian champions, which after two wins last week now has a record of 4-0. Last Tuesday, the Redmen easily defeated Huntsville 20-3. Gil Nieuwendyk led the Redmen scorers with three goals and seven assists. Scott Boyde, Derek Keenan and Blane Harrison also had hat tricks for the Redmen. Kevin Antram, Terry Bullien, Barry Breme, Adam Kluwac, Kevin Van Sickle, Keith Begley, Dale Kernohan and Scott McMichael rounded out the scoring. The Redmen then played Brampton, the third major level team in Ontario, on Thursday, again easily winning 24-3. Harrison bad four goals while Beguty, Kluwak and Garlinw ad hat tricks. Bemar, Keenan and Van Sickle had two goals each with singles going to Nieuwen- dyk, McMichael, Bill Callan, Antram a nd Andy Perroni. Duignan said there ,i stili room for improvement. But while the Redmen improve, Duignan hopes the rest of the league, made up of major and senior -level teams, will improve. Ithwould better serve the fans and the game in general," hesaid. He notes that Peterborough, the other major team, and senior squads Owen Sound and Fergus; are all beginning to show im- provement as the season pro- gresses. The Redmen were to host Mississauga Tuesday night and then travel to Peterborough Wednesday night. Duignan said the Peter- borough game will be a good "gauge" of his team but more importantly it will be the first time the Redmen will play on astro-turf. Duignan said Peterborough had the turf installed this year, a concept new to the league. The turf will cause different bounces in the ball and will cut down on the mobility of the goaltender, who will be unable to slide across the crease, said Duignan.. "It will be a new feature for us. It is also conducive to burns," said Duignan. secured the tie. Other scorers for Warriors were Jeff McComb, Jason Rich- ards and Jeff Whittle with two goals each. Greg Lepine, Bill! Passfield, Adam Foote, Steve Dyment and Todd Wilson had singles. Warriors play Brampton in Whitby tonight (Wednesday) at Iroquois Park.
