Debbie Luchuk Auberge, an emergency shelter for women who are in abusive situations, recently assumed a new naine to honor a former resident, Denise Penny. Auberge is now known as the Denise House in memory of Penny who was fatally shot by ber husband of 17 years on March 12, 1988. Penny came to the shelter from Bobcaygeon, having made "a definite decision to leave" according to Mary Beth Zeeman, staff _member at the -shelter. Penny had been subjected to ernotional and psychological abuse by her husband, constantly threatened with death, said Zeeman. When the abuse began to affect her daughter, Penny made the decision to leave. Wh-ile at the shelter, Zeeman said "she made quite an impact on the shelter, and was a very fiendly, warmn person." On Feb. 16 of this year, she left Auberge to stay with family in Aberta, ber transportation fund- ed by the Durhanm regional social services. Her husband found Penny at her sister's home on March 12, shot Penny ond then killed himself in the presence of their tbree-year-old daughter, said Zee- man. The sad thing, according to Zeeman, is that society and, the media don't recognize the fact that abuse not only constitutes physical abuse, but includes emotional and psychological abuse as welI. Penny was an example of a psychologically abused person. The Denise House is an emergency shelter for womnen Who are in abusive situations or are tbreatened with abuse. Abusive situations constitute mental, psychologicai, physical and sexual abuse. The shelter offers a 24-hr. emergency lime and-service. It i ja non-profit organization, relying on funding from three levels Of governxnent and fundraising events. The staff of Denise House, through contact with other social services agencies and the Canada Employment Centre, assist the abused to flnd a job and ail the assistance they need to support themselves and their children. As the shelter is only a tem- porary lodging,and some women need counselling and longer term support, some of the women are referred to the Simcoe Settlement House to help regain their self.esteem. Zeeman says the abuse cuts across class, income and age lines. The average income of an abused woman's family is $25,000 per annum; the average age is 30. The staff see women who have been in brief relationsbips and those who have been in longer relationships sucb as Penny. The reason why the shelter sees more women from Iower income groups, Zeeman said, is because these women often do not have tbe financial resources to make a break from the abusive situation, nor the "support system" a middle or upper class woman may have. She further added that family stratification over large distances makes it difficult for many women to obtain support from ber family when she needs it Most. Denise House is mun by Il fuil-time staff, tbree part-time and by approimately 40 to 50 volunteers, according to Zeeman. Volunteers are trained twice a year, and performn a variety of services from typing to cbild care and emotional support. The shelter relies on the public for donations of clothes and furniture for the women it bouses. Altbough the facility bas no room for storing fumniture, persons interested in donating furniture to someone wbo needs it for an apartment can call the House and will be connected witb someone who can use it.
