Leoen from the beat! Education through Ma:tial Arts. Pairents call: 666-2878 The board approved a 13,236-sq. metre, two-story building for the Whitby Çatholic Hig h School, at an estimated cost Of 914248,300. The total "pupil load1' that the new French and English school will accommodate is 1,232 students. The school is an "open concept" design with separate French and English education sections. The other school, - an elementary school, is a complementary design to the se- condary school, an open concept building with expanding lunch room/stage, music room/general purpose room te meet grant approval. As well, child care facilities have been provided for in both schools, with separate entrances. The schools are to be part of a planned complex including a church, soccer fields, a track,ý playground and park land. "The Town of Whitby has definitely been a part of the team," said Whitby trustee Tom Qidman of the planing process for the new high school. "It is rewarding when the Town pulls weight," Oldman said It (the school) is unlike any- thing anywhere in the region, separate or public," he continued. Oldman said ho was glad that the schools are flnally being buit, as ho said that this project is the reason whyho got involved in the board. Whitby has been without a separate school secondary facility for several years since the transfer of Denis O'Connor HiEgh School to Ajax. At that time, . parents were promised a new facility in the near futur e. The schools are scheduled to completed by the fail of 1989. At the final meeting of the separate board last night, trustees voted a "catch-up" amnount of $2,300 (to be added in the faîl after elections), followed by a 4.5 per cent increase in 1988, 1989 and 1990 to bring the trustee's honorarium up to $9,998 by 1990/91. "The increase is stilI behind the times, compared with honorariums (given to comparable boards elsewhere) for this year," said Pickering trustee Kevin Ashe. "This represents fir dollar value for increased responsibility." "We've looked at boards the same size as ourselves. You have to be informed in ahl matters," said Whitby trustee Catherine Tunney. "There's definitely more demand (on trustees)." Trustees learned that Middlesex and Ottawa separate school boards, which are sightly smaller than Durham, pay more money to their trustees. "It's fair to compare apples with apples," Ashe said, referring to this disparity in pay.. Trustees also passed a motion not to apply an economic penalty The vice chairman of the board will receive an allowance of 15 per cent, over the allowance paid a trustee, as will the chair of the English and French language sections. Most trustees agreed that the vice chair and especially the chair of language sections deserved the extra allowance for the extra responsibility that these positions require. The chairman of the board receives an allowance of 50 per cent over that paid to a trustee at this time, and this pay arrangement was approved for 1988/89.
