Brady teaches teachers in Cameroon By Debbie Luchuk A teacher at Henry Street High School has been chosen to "teach teachers" in Cameroon this summer with Project Overseas. Gord Brady, head of the English department at Henry Street, has been selected a second time by the program to aid in'the professional development project to assist teachers in Third World countries. The program is organized by the Canadian Teachers' Federation, and 60 to 70 teach- ers are chosen each year from across Canada to go to underdeveloped countries to teach teachers, to help them upgrade their skills. Brady said the program covers 15 to 16 countries in Africa, South America, the Caribbean and Indonesia. Last year another Henry Street teacher, John Soehner (math) went to Guyana in South America. Brady had previously been involved in West Africa two years ago. This time he has been selected as team leader of a six-teacher team in Cameroon as he knows the area from his previous stint. "I felt really lucky to be chosen in '86, but moreso to return and see progress from two years ago. In a letter to the department, the association noted that since the school's gym is currently being enlarged to approximately 3,200 sq. metres, the school would make "an ideal community school site." The department has informed the association that it should conduct a com'munity survey to identify interest in the community and what programs they would like to see offered. Council also approved, on Palmerston addition cost goes Up By Debbie Luehuk Palmerston Public School's addition will now cost an extra $19,352, after the discovery of an old septic bed on the site of the addition. Trustees at the Durham Board of Education's Monday meeting learned from administration staff that the septic bed was not discovered in initial soil tests. Several layers of unsuitable organic material has to be removed in order to place foundations for the addition. The work includes additional excavation, deeper foundation walls and granular backfill replacement for the unsuitable materials under floor slabs. Trustees approved the change order to add $19,352 to the cost of the addition. FAMIL Y WELLNESS CLINIC Chiropractors:- Dr. Peter Wysotski, D.C. Dr. Sally P. Shlapak, B.Sc., D.C. (Hon.) Each provincial federation puts in money to fund the teams, pay their expenses, accommo- dation, and to get them to the various locations. The teachers are not paid for their work. "We're not allowed to take spouses, because this is a working project. We don't go to places geared to tourism, and it would be too much sitting around waiting (for the non-teaching spouses)," Brady added. In its 27 year of operation, Project Overseas chooses teachers with a minimum of five years' experience, "with a background in flexible teaching situations," according to Brady. This year, Brady will be teaching creative writing and drama. The teachers attending "classes" from Cameroon and elsewhere will "learn different teaching strategies. (We will) show teachers how beneficial it can be to have a federation for networking." "The goal is to see what they want to teach and teach them effective ways to doing it," Brady concluded.
