West Lynde relay team wins gold at provincal WITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 29,1988, PAGE 23 After setting a record for Durham , Region elementary schools, a ýIest Lynde atom boys' relay teani recently captured a gold at the Ontario level. The team of Andre Marois, Mark Vanderlip and twins Chris and Mark Price set their record in the 4-by-1OOm relay. But at the Ontaro level, the boys won in a medley relay race, which includes runs of 200, 100, 100 and 400 metres. The four are also members of the Durham X-Ls lrack -and Club, a joint venture between the Durham Board of Education elementary schools association and the Oshawa Olympics Track and Field Association. The team, made up of 62 Durham elementary athietes, was formed to give the athietes the opportunity to. go on to higher levels of competition. At t he Ontario mite, tyke and atom championships held June 19, the Durham teani won 10 gold, seven silver and nine bronze medals. From Whitby, the West Lynde relay teamn was first while Marois added a fifth- place finish in the long jump for atom (age 10 and il). 'Ight of West Lynde waýý the atom high jump and -lau, for that event in the Internationhl Youth Meet of Champions Aug. 5, 6 and 7 at Etobicoke. Dan Bainard, an outstanding athlete frn Pringle Creek public school, was. second in an atom relay, third in the 400m run and fourth in 800m run. He also qualified for the 400m event at the international meet. And a third qualifier froni Whitby for that meet will be Jean Shaw of F.M, Heard, third in tyke (9 and 10) girls'long jump. Nominated by the Durham club for the international meet will be Roxanne Woodley of Kathleen Rowe, who was fourth in both the 100m and 200m runs. Mark Swain of Dr. Robert Thornton had two second-place* finishes in relay events for tykes at the Ontario championships.' Mm Vanderlip of West Lynde was third in a relay. Two Whitby rriembers of the Oshawa Olympics Track Club had top finishes in the Ontario Legion district F championshijps Jurie 18 in Belleville. Mark Bateman won the 100m run and 100m hurdles for midget boys (17 and under) . Jennifer Cooper was second in the 3,000M run for midget girls.
