WHTrBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, JXJLY 13, 1988, PAGE 15 Spoirt frishiing association aims to improve faclilities By Debbie Luchuk Residents who enjoy fishing out of Whitby's harbor have had their own association since the fal of i987. > The Port Whitby Sport Fishing Association was formed last October by several fishermnen of the area, according to Nigel Schilling, chairman of the group. Because Schilling was known as "the father of sport fishing through the Chamber of Commerce" and. because of bis occupation as lawyer, he says he was approached to be chairman. The association acts as a social and "pressure" group for area fishermen with and without boats. It draws from ail sectors of the community, inciuding some Town councillors and the "iargest charter boat operator out of Whitby, AI Lord," Schilling said. The membership fee is only $20, and those interested can join at any time. "A main purpose of the group is to provide a voice te the powers that be (te obtain) docks, cieaning stations, etc.," Schilling said. "One of the movers behind the group was the Town of Whitby, who wanted input with respect to facilities," he added. Apparently, Durham Region bas designated funding to inves- tigate fishing in this area and what the needs are to improve fishing out of Whitby. Schilling says regional repre- sentatives have gone around the lake, surveying other fishermen at other ports to determine what they have in comparison to the relative lack of facilities here. The association has been meeting with the Town to determine what priority the Town is going te give sport fishing in the harbor. Coho salmon runs, on both sides-.,of the lake, have been poor this ý'year, Schilling said last week. He suspects that this is because, as of Iast Wednesday, July 6, the water temperature had not risen to the same levels as last year (Waterý temperatures (c;z:o rose significantly during the heat wave last week). Until last week, the surface temperature has been in the higb 40's (Fah~renheit) compared.- to iast year when the surface temperature was in the 60's. "They're out there somewhere," Schilling said of the salmon. At this- time there are 70 members in. the Port Whitby Sport Fishing Association. To join the club, or for more information, cali Harvey Goid at the Whitby Free Press (668-6111) or Nigel Schilling (668-3392 or 686-1808). k M 0'ÀKýIS> Angling better and better EXPIRES JULY 30/88 SA Whitby charter boat operator says fishing is improving every year on the lake, partly because of more experienced anglers and more technoiogy available. "Salmon fishing bas been better every year, with 'a better network of information," says AI Lord. Lord bas had 20 years boating and' fishing experience, and belongs te, the Ontario Charter Boat Assoiation. "(The Association) bas much higher safety standards (than the average charterboat operator). They have more than the Coast Guard," Lord said. Lord says his "Fishing's It Charters" offers trips for "as long as the custemer can afford," but generaliy customers prefer six- hour trips from either 7 a.m. te 1 p.m. or from 2 to 8 p.m. I Lord said six-hour trips are priced from $50 per person, depending on the number of persons invoived in the trip. 1 ONTARIO RECORD FISH -SP-ECIES Chinook Salmon Brook Trout Brown Trout Lake Trout Rainbow Trout Lake Whitefish Largeniouth Bass Smâllmouth Bal Muskellunge Nortbern Pike Waileye (Yellow Pickerel) WEIGHT Metic Impeiiai 20.62kg 45 lbs 6 oz 6.58kg" 14 lbs 8 oz 11.14kg 26 Ibs 8oz 28.63kg 63 Ibs 2 oz 13.21kg 29 lbs 2 oz 6.53kg 14 lbs 6 oz 4.4g10 Ibs 7 oz 5.22kg il lbs 8 oz 27.92kg 61 lbs 9 oz 19.11kg 42 lbs 2 oz 10.09kg 22 lbs 4 oz LOCATION DATE Credit River 1980 Nipigon River 1916 Lake Huron 1980 iake Superior 1952 Nottawasaga River 1975 Meaford Harbour 1984 Preston Lake 1976 Lake Ontario 1964 Eagle Lake 1940 Delaney Lake 1948 Niagara River 1943 SEA pORT 99LC LORA N 1c .W3aIY Disp ay \WindoWs .99 WNaYPooi'1 10 WNaypon eif in Crs rackTÇ~ ErrOr AlaIS *Anchor Watçh pdaVfln *and rnuçh more SALE $me9 icudes antenflaand base Modeiýo 0523..8 Re.$83537 7:~ L,Çç -17L 7' Model 07171 fýeg.$065 FISHINDRN oFull 8 Color *Water -Temperature * Boat Speed s5 Dept h Ranges Zoom *Atomatîç Rangîng & Trackîng 'flcludes Trarlsduçer -., moe,0-g- ff ý4e g B Wà ïà li« Il LJSporting GOQOSA WE HAVE ALL FJSHIING ACCESSORJIES AND MUCH MORE!
