The search is on for the trucker who will be named the 33rd armual 'Firestone National Truck Hero.' The person or organization Ithat nominates the 'winner wil'receive a $200 cash' reward. This award is endorsed by the Canada Safety council and sponsored by Firestone Canada Inc. "Usually truckers' receive no recognition for their unselfish acts which frequently avert serious accidents and save many lives. Chances are a professional trucker will be the flrst on the scene during a road mishap. The annual competitioni to recogmize this good samnaritan, focuses public attention-on the many acts of bravery'performed by. truck drivers,"i says F. Wayne Mitchell, president of Firestone Canada Inc. My making this award we are recognizing the inherent attitude towards safety in trucking firmns, and Firestone in its own way is promoting safety in the trans- portation industry, " he adds. .The 1988 Firestone National Truck Hero will receive a $1,000 cash prize, a VIF all-expense-paid weekend for two at a luxury Toronto hotel, including first- class travel arrangements from anyhr in Canada and a personal trophy, ail courtesy of Firestone, as well as an iscribed Rolex wrist watch, compliments of the Rolex Watch Company. Some tips on long weekend'driving Th e two major long holdiay weekends of summer -- Simcoe Day (Civic Holiday), and Labor Day --. are traditionally high-accident times on our high- ways. Here are some tips from thé Ontario Safety League that may not 'only prove useful in dea]ing with holiday traffic, but may also saye a life or two. 1. Cet lo ts of rest before your trip and leave early before the usual "big- push." Allow yourself plenty of time. ,,2. . Plan your trip so that you avoid driving during the high temperature periods -- lla.m. te 4p.m. -- when tempers are on the short side. 3. Don't tailgate. Under ideal conditions, cars need te maintain a following distance of at least tWo seconds; trucks need a cushion of at least four seconds or more. : 4. Don't cut in. Maintain this same safety factor when passing and moving in front of another vehicle on the highway. 5. Always signal. Let other drivers know what you intend te do before you do it. That includes signalling well before turning or changing lanes. 6. Avoid glare from lights. When travelling at night, dim your headlights when meeting or folowing another vehicle. 7. Always observe posted speed limits. Remember, the jýosted speed is calculated for ideal condtions. Anything less than ideal means lower speed. 8. Always wear your seat belt and use infant and child restraints according te manu- facturers instructions. 9. Neyer drive under the influence of alcohol. 10. Stay out ôf the other driver's blind spot. If you cannot see the truck driver's rear-view mirrors, he or she cannot see you. -ARE YO0U R INSU RAN CE COSTS BITIG INTO YOU?9 . Min*istry introduces air brake program Ontarios transportation min-, istry bas officially announded the introduction of an air brake endorsement driver licensing program. Effective May, 1989,. drivers of air brake equipped vehicles will require a "Z' endorsement on their licence. This endorsement may be obtained starting May 1, 1988. A "grandfather" conversion period will be allowed from May 1 to December 31, 1988 to enable drivers of air brake equipped vehicles to obtain the endorse- ment. Application forms will be available through the ministry's driver examination and licence issuing office and weigh-scale locations. According to the mi'nstry, company-employed drivers should complete -the form,- indicate their experience and hav;e it signed by their employer. If self-employed, a driver experienced on air brake equipped. vehià cles should com- plete the. application form and take it to a iiotary public or commissioner of oath's . for signature, and then return it to the ministry. Driversý wanting to obtain the endorsement on their driver's licence who do flot qualify for "grandfathering," will be required to take a written test in air brake, systemn knowledge and a practical test with an air brake equipped vehicle. Alternatively, they can satisfactorily 1 complete a ministry-4pproved air brake course. These will be available to the public and some community colîleges a~d through the Ontario Safety e ge.
