By Debbie Luchuk Durhamu Region was honored with a visit from Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, last Tuesday afternoon. The princess was on an officiai visit to Ontario, primarily for the recent running of the Queen's Plate. lier visit to Bowmanville for the officiai opening* of the renovated Town Hall was the last in a series of visits and functions in King City, Toronto, Hamnilton and Scarborough. The Bowmaà nville* Legion pipe band entertained the crowd of more than a. thousand'. people with bagpipe music prior té the arrivai of the princess's en- tourage.' The royai standard was raised by local Sea Cadets. Princess Margaret was greeted on -her arriva by Newcastle mayor John Winters and deputy mayor Ann Cowman. Members of Newcastle council, locai MPs and MPPs and Durhanm Regionai Chairman' Gary Herrema were presented te the princess following her reception by the mayor. A brownie from the 3rd Bowmanville -pack, Kà tie McCreary, 9, presented flowers to Princess Margaret on the steps.of the, hail before thé princess entered the building. ."I'm excited," McCreary said prior te presentîng the flowers. She was sel ected from brownies of Bowmanville as best exem- plifying the organization. Ibe princess was wearing an ivory satin blouse, with off-white crepe tailored »skirt and whité sandals. The flowers presented to ber by the. brownie aptly com- plemented the outfit as tbey were creamy white. Upon entering the Town -Hall, Princess Margaret viewed the work of local artists in the gallery area. She then unveiled a plaque recording the occasion in the council chamber. The princess then proceeded out the south entrance te visit with veterans. and members of the guiding association. .After a lengtby period of visiting with the public, Legion members and guides, she re- entered ber limousine for a trip to the Peterborough airport to fly out to Rhode Island for a private vacation. Enthusiastie crowds cheered and waved flags, and a few children presented ber with flowers on ber walk-by. One veteran with whom the princess spent a great deai -of tinie visiting was Phil Haynan, 63, formerly of the Royal Navy. Hayman relates: "I said, hi, how a re you? I had met ber before in London. We were going te the show,, te "Young Bess,"an preceded ber. She saw us on the red carpet and, said, "Hli. What are you doing here?" Hayman said that he bad met ber 25 years ago. JennyWalsh, ,8, ,another brownie, said, "She asked>if we have any younger, kids in. the pack called Rainbows, and asked if we were ail one group. I think she's reai nice and pretty.", Princess Margaret had a specialnamesake in the crowd. Her naîne> is Margaret Rose Gourley, anrd- she is 'completely paralysed from a stroke. In ber mid-thirties, she lives at Oshawa General Hospital, and is noted for art she creates there, using ber head 'te guide a paintbrush.. Flends Gwen Glover and Shirley Lemon brought ber te see the princess in a van that could acomdate ber stretcher. Glover said she was "very overwhelmed" to meet bher nainesake. She (Princessa Margaret) said she hoped that Margaret wasn'f toc bot." Princess Margaret is the younger sister of Queen*Elizabeth and daughter of the late. King, George VI and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. She is divorced and bas two children. Committee formed Whitby residents recently established a steering committee te organize the Arthritis Society's fundraising drive in September. Valerie Hundert chairs the committee made up of directers' Josie Laarakkers, A. Roy Netbercott, Pat Michieli, Bob Leger, Fran Olenik, Lee Cassidy, Monique Hoare, Margaret Young, Ann Finan and Anne Hendriks. The Wblitby branch hopes to raise $17,000 during a door-te-door canvass.
