*For bis encouraging coaching of a squirt hockey team, John Feret of Whitby was nominated for a Heart of Gold Award by six-year-old Andrew Drake, a player on the teain. Drake's letter of nomination was written by bis mother, and outlined the ways that Feret had been a supportive coach, going out of his way to teach the children to have fun while learning the skills of hockey. After losing a tournament at the end of the seeson, Drake said that coach Feret bought 'the teain trophies even though they hadn't won. Feret works for Hammett Plastics, and this pest year was bis. flrst as a hockey coach. He is coaching a squirt. besebaîl team this summer. "I tried 'to teach the fundaxùentals and skating skills," Feret seid, adding that he was happy that he was there to see the players' progression from 1~ falling frequently to skating and playing confidently. Feret said he started coacsung because he wanted to get bis son into athletics. "Getting youth involved in athletics is good for their upbringing. It is very important not to put pressure on them, to make it fun for them," Feret said. "Seeing a smile on their face is very enjoyable," he added. Regarding the awarding of trophies to bis teem,- Feret seid, "Since only the champion gets trophies, I wanted to meke cer- tain that the teain had trophies. They deserved something for their efforts." Feret believes that anyone who has the time should do something for their community - it's part of being a good citizen. "Anyone who has the time. to commit themselves to the comm- unity should help. It's up to the community to set a good exemple for youth," he concluded. A 0F Recogniti*on for ringette support Among the Heart of Gold nominees, an Ashburn couple was chosenfo the'award for their support of local ririgette and basebail teams. "We've been inviolved with ids' (teains) since we've had the store (10 yeers) ," Heather said. "Ever since our kids got involved in ringette, we've really enJoyed it," she added. The Sudeykos have- two daughters aged 10 and- 12. Jerry Sudeyko said that they get involved with youth sports (aiso, supporting lacrose and soccer) 'se they have a good upbringing, and to keep them out of tropble. "Today many. ki ds are totally ignorêd by their parents, he added. To assist the annual summer job hunt, the Sudeykos hire a-girl and a, boy each year at their shop. It helps to teach them what they're in for after high school or college," Jerry said. The Sudeykos attend every basebal or ringette gaine that they cen, to support their'teains, they said. As for ringette, Jerry Sudeyko says, "It's non-contact, good for girls who want to play hockey but don't want the aggres- siveness, who went to skate, meet a lot of people, learn how to deal with others and learn how to take directions."
