Free Press photo Objections made to granny fiat addition to house By Debbie Luchuk A rezoning application to allow a "granny fiat" addition to a residence on Broadview Ave. generated opposition at a public meeting held by the Whitby administrative comnittee in July. John and Marie Buchanan want to erect the granny fiat as an addition to their existing single family residence to accom- modate Marie Buchanan's par- ents. Public notice of the meeting was sent toalal property owners within 120 meters of the Buchanans' home. The committee heard the comments of several neighbors, all in opposition to the rezoning application. Pat Dooley, who chairs the Corridor Aiea Ratepayers Association (CARA) said, "This is another case of bylaw spot zoning. Spot zoning has been going on for the last 12 years since the officiai plan (was created). Until we get an officiai plan, we're still going to have problems like this crop Up." I bought a lot and built a nice home on it because it is a single home area," said a nearby property owner, Paul DePalma. He added that for this reason he was opposed to an addition to the Buchanan residence as it would change the nature of the neighborhood. Another resident questioned the definition of the terni granny fiat" and the difference between the proposaI and a multiple dwelling. I would like a legal definition of the granny fiat," she said. Another resident read from a brochure from the Ministry of Housing, saying the document defined a granny fiat as a detached or detachable dwelling that; is to be dismantled upon the departure or death of an aging parent. Residents were concerned that property values would decrease, that it would set a precedent in the neighborhood for illegal apartment housing, and change the character of the neigh- borhood. They were also concerned about future renting of the unit to others after theý Buchanans' parents were gone. "t is not our intention to ever rent the place to anyone else," said John Buchanan, who is a Wihitby trustee on the Durham board of Education. He added that he was willing to guarantee this. 'We don't want to see Marie's parents enter a nursing home," he said. Marie Buchanan said that her parents have health problems, and defended the necessity for two bedrooms in the addition, saying, "Theyfind it difficuit to share a bedrooni." She added that "they need a SEE PAGE 22 Students get business loans By- Debbie Luchuk Students with an idea for a summer business but with littie or no capital to start up can apply to a provincial loan program to obtain the needed funds interest free for the termn of their business.
