PAGE A6, WHITBY FREE PRESS, ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL, AUGUST 3,1988 Laurie Skreslet to speak at '88 Peter Perry awards By Brian Winter A new format and national celebrity guest speaker a will be the special features of the Peter Perry in 1988. Award presentation WHITBY Chamber of Commerce members sweep Dundas St. in preparation for Cen- tennial celebrations in June 1955. Whitby Archives photo Since 1955 the Whitby Chamber of Commerce has presented an award named after the town's founder to the outstanding citizen of Whitby. The presentation, on Nov. 15, will take the form of a banquet at Heydenshore Pavilion, with a theme of achievement. Guest speaker for the evening will be Laurie Skreslet, the first Canadian to successfully reach the summit of Mount Everest, on Oct. 5, 1982. Tickets will go on sale at $30 per person later in the fall for this special occasion. Among the changes in the format this year will be the elimination of the nomination forms in the banks, which has beena feature of the award for many years. Nomination forms will be mailed to all service clubs and a number of corporations in the town, and all nominations from the clubs and the public must be mailed to the Whitby Chamber of Commerce office. The Peter Perry Award originated with a speech by Ontario County Judge John E. Pritchard at a banquet to mark Whitby's centennial as a town in 1955. The judge referred to the contributions of Whitby's founder Peter Perry to the development of the town, and asked if there were any Peter Perrys in the room that night. He answered his own question by stating that there were many "Peter Perrys" in Whitby, more than 100 years after the original Peter Perry had died. The Whitby Chamber of Commerce, attracted by the judge's remarks, originated the idea of presenting an outstanding citizen award named after Peter Perry. Judge Pritchard donated the plaque and since 1955 there have been 29 winners of the Peter Perry Award. Over the years there have been different formats for the presentation of the award. The first Peter Perry Awards were presented as sports banquets in the days of the famous Whitby Dunlops championship hockey team. Later, the award was presented at a trade fair banquet and for many years the Peter Perry banquet coincided with the official opening of the County Town Carnival. For the past five years, the award has been part of an evening'of entertainment at the Whitby Centennial Building. With its new format, the Peter Perry Award of 1988 promises to be one of the highlights of the year in Whitby. Any person may nominate someone for the Peter Perry Award. The nominee must be a resident of Whitby. Only individuals, couples or families will be considered, not, community groups. Anonymous nominations will not be considered and mere numbers of nominations will not influence the judges. The award may be made posthumously. The Chamber of Commerce appoints a selection committee each year to review the nominations and select the winner. Further details on the Peter Perry Award will be published in the local newspapers later in the year.
