A committee was set up to draft a suitable constitution and bylaws, and by mid-September the charter was received and the constitution approved. The original charter bas disappeared over the last 50 years, but the Whitby Chamber of Commerce still has its registration under the Boards of Trade Act, granted on Jan. 9, 1953 when it went under reorganization. The Whitby Chamber of Commerce bas served the town since its formation in 1928, with the exception of three years during the Second World War (1942 - 45) when it was dormant. The Chamber was reorganized by today under its 1988 president Bob Richardson. Over the years the Chamber bas acted as an industrial commission, a downtown merchants' organization and a promotional organization for Whitby. Since 1955, Whitby'i Centennial year, the Chamber has presented the Peter Perry Award- to Whitby's outstandixig citizen. Since 1982 the Chamber has sponsored a Marigold Contest to promote Whitby's town flower. The Chamber of Commerce was responsible for founding the Whitby County Town Carnival in 1966, which operated for 15 years, and maintains the service club signs at the entrances to the town. These signs were repainted in May, 1988. Throughout its 60 years, the Whitby Chamber of Commerce has been an integral part of our town, taking part in almost every aspect of community life. The Chamber looks forward to the future with hope and confidence, and like the town, is preparing itself for the rapid growth Whitby will see in the coming years. Marigold contest helps boost tourism and community pride By Brian Winter In 1981 the council of the Town of Whitby adopted the marigold as the town's official flower to promote tourism and pride in our community. The Whitby Chamber of Commerce, picking up on this theme, instituted a marigold contest which is now in its seventh year. Early in the spring all gardeners are encouraged to plant marigolds, and entry forms are distributed through the various garden centres in the THE EQUITABLE LIFE INSURANCE COMPANYOF CANADA EMPLOYEE BENEFIT PLANS •GROUP RETIREMENT SAVINGS PLANS • PENSION PLANS Contact your group representative.... The entry forms are orange like the marigold, and are placed in wooden orange boxes at the centres. About 20 to 25 entries are received each year in the four categories, residential, comm- ercial, industrial and institutional. Entries closed on July 31. In mid-August, judges from the town's garden centres and a Chamber representative visit all the gardens entered to judge them for layout and design, quality of maintenance, general health and condition and plant display. One winner is selected in each category. The winners receive a free dinner for two at the Garden Gate restaurant at Cullen Gardens, where they receive keeper plaques and their names are engraved on a brass tray 216 Mary st. E which hangs in the Tourist Information Centre. This year's marigold contest awards night will be Sept. 20, with guest speaker Dennis Carter, tourism manager for the Ontario Ministry of Tourism and Recreation. Mayor Bob Attersley traditionally makes the presentation of the awards.
